Get your son a Toshiba. I'm a journalist and have been using laptops for 20 years now. I've used other brands through work, but Toshiba has always provided me with a reliable preoduct. I still have the first one I bought in 1990 and it still works. My work computer is a Dell and I'm not thrilled with it. Also tried a Hitachi, which was such a disaster that the company stopped making laptops altogether. Apple is also good from what I hear, but MUCH more expensive than Toshiba. Viruses are almost a non-issue with Apple, so you might want to go in that direction if that is a concern.
We've got Laptops under $750.
