Love these ideas.. here is an awesome idea for doing a family gift exchange with all the gifts being charitable donations made in the name of the person you picked for the exchange. It's in the article here: http://www.celebrationideasonline.com/christmas-shopping-tips.html

LOVE THIS IDEA, BUT ALSO FOR ANIMALS. GET ON THE PETA WEBSITE AND WATCH THE VIDEOS AND HELP THEM TOO.
replyA GREAT CHRISTMAS GIFT IS GIVE A CHARITABLE DONATION TO ASPCA.COM, PETFINDER.COM, OR THE ANIMAL HUMANE SOCIETY IN HONOR OF SOMEONE IN THEIR NAME. THIS WAY YOU HELP ANIMALS WHO NEED YOU AT THE SAME TIME YOU SHOW HOW MUCH SOMEONE MEANS TO YOU.

Great ideas, PJ, to remember the animals. All of the organizations you mentioned are deserving but don't forget your local non-kill shelters. As director of one of the largest medium to large breed non-kills in Central California, Noah's Friends Animal Sanctuary near Orange Cove (SE of Fresno), I can assure you that we and our "sister" shelters can use all of the help we can get. Our area has one of the highest per capita euthanasia rates in the entire US (i.e., the average age of a purebred lab on death row in the Central SJ Valley is 18 months of age)so all rescues in our area are always busting at the seams. Then there's Beagles and Buddies in El Monte that rescues a gazillion Beagles and Hounds abandoned in pounds up our way as well as in the LA Basin, and Cat House on the Kings near Reedley, CA, and the list goes on and on -- all of us are totally dependent on donations (no government funding whatsoever). We're in the trenches every day, rain, snow or shine: walking death rows to pull as many as we can as fast as we can; trying to earn the trust of dogs and cats abandoned on roadsides and in orchards so that we can get them to safety; sitting in fields picking off ticks from strays so that we can load them into our vehicles... Then there's driving the Rescue Railroad to get companion animals wherever they need to go. If you can't donate, consider volunteering.
