#5 Having a comfortable place to study, relax and hang with friends is essential for college. When it comes to dorm seating, you must think compact as traditional furniture such as futons and couches will force you to bunk your beds or limit you living space. The SlouchBack is a solution that allows you to have all the comforts of a couch while maintaining your optimal living space. In just 30 seconds the SlouchBack inflates and transforms your ordinary dorm bed into a comfortable couch. You can get one at, http://SlouchBack.com

I must agree that I would have been an excited grad if I received any of the above. However, a few of these items are quite frankly flawed in terms of their how necessary they are. Any student would be excited to receive a MacBook, but my HPmini works just as well for a fraction of the cost. So parents, find another means of dispersing the $500 you'll save by purchasing a cheaper, equally reliable laptop. (Your student would be much happier if you put it towards their enormous student loans.) More importantly, be wise when purchasing a mini fridge. Most colleges limit students to a specific type of mini fridge. Be sure to check the requirements before making an expensive purchase. Surviving college is all about budgeting and spending money wisely; parents-that means you too.

I got my HS grad a cell phone. And no...I didn't get him an iPhone. Instead, I opted for a prepaid cell phone. After doing some research, I found the TracPhone prepaid. It's $45 a month and he will get unlimited talk, text, and data. This way, he doesn't have to worry about a hefty cell phone bill nor going over his minutes. It cheap and convenient. I recommend it for every college student because I know how those kids can talk!
