a Pentium III processor, another one at 900 Mhz? Give me a break. These are not PCs, they are toys! It is a 100% waste of money to buy this crap. "When you buy Dell, you know you are getting quality". That is garbage. I am looking at a Dell Mini a customer paid 178.00 to Dell and it is worthless when new, with 4 Gbyte hard drive! Forget this trash and buy a real product! If it is not a dual core Intel Processor, forget it. 12 Gbytes hard drive? These are toys, not PCs. I had to buy out of my own pocket a 16GByte drive for a mini so the little owner could actually use it. Dell told me, the customer screwed up and it was not THEIR fault. He also told me ALL DELL SUPPORT is now in India and if you do not like it, shove it. I have comouting for 52 years and have never seen such crap sold. P IIIs and 900 MHz CPUS died 15 years ago!

I would not buy another Toshiba. I have one that i got a year ago under warranty is was sent back 4 times for the same repair. The modem blowed 5 times, the last time i didn't bother sending it back they could not fix it, nor did they replace it, their answer was it was fixed it lasted 2 weeks. The last time it lasted a week. I got satellite internet just so i can get online.
In my opinion Toshiba Service sucks

It's been my experience that you get what you pay for with a computer. It's worth a little more up front to get a decent computer that is going to be able to handle what you need it to handle, and last for more than a few months.

These are a waste of money, 12Gig hard drive and 1Gig of memory max. The prcessors are dinosaurs by today's tech standards. If you can't afford a new one buy a used one, there are plenty of used just off of contract or warranty that give you ten times the bang for your buck. If it hasn't had any problems in the first year of it's existence and hasn't been tampered with, it should have plenty of years left in it. You buy this for your tennager the hard drive will be filled with 400 mp3's and 200 photo's and no more room for school work!

I just bought a Gateway model NV53a24u for 499.00. 2.3ghz processor, 4GBDDR3 memory, 320GB harddrive,, DVD-Super Multi DL drive, AMD Athelon II X2 processor, 15.6" HD LED LCD Dsiplay, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250, Multi in 1 Card reader, 802.11 b/g/n wireless card, 1.3 Megapixel webcam. All for 535.oo After tax. I'm sorry but this is a FAR better deal then any of the computers listed. The author considers 1GB of memory good in todays laptops for under 500.00!? Clearly Sally just hastily looked through the Sunday ads and picked a few laptops out so she could meet her deadline! I Home Premium 64-bit. This woman very clearly didn't do any sort of solid research, and her editor should be castrated and fired. Thank you and come again. I forgot to mention, the laptop is also blue, and we all know colors cost more and it was still 499.00 before tax.

You have to watch out for these "cheap laptop" deals. I love Dell and I got an Inspiron laptop at Best Buy. The first one I had to return. The touch pad was so sensitive the cursor moved around like a mouse on meth. They replaced it, only to give me one that constantly overheated. I had to pay $69.00 to have it fixed although I had just gotten it because (they didnt tell me) my warranty was only for wrapping it up and shipping it out for service. I DONT THINK SO.
I complained to Dell and what I ened up getting was an ugraded REFURBISHED laptop. Not cool. It's worth your money to stay away from deals under $500.00. Pay a few hundred more and you will be better off.

Almost all support for any electronic items is in India. Try understanding what they are saying on the phone. Nearly impossible. Shame on Dell. They are losing my business when I need a new computer.

If your going to buy any type of computer your come out better getting it from one of the shopping channels like QVC or HSN. They will give you 30 days to return or replace it at no additional charge. plus the better ones usually come with a 2 or 3 year warranty.

Completely misleading title, says "Cheap Laptops". .. yet it describes mostly netbooks, which they call "notebooks".... netbooks are on a different ballpark completely, they are cheap for a reason, they don't have an optical drive, meaning if you want to play a CD or DVD, or even a regular game that's not downloadable, you need to purchase a separate optical drive....

I don't know who Sally Worsham is, but she shouldn't be handing out advice, because her article is fraught with error. The Asus notebook is not a notebook - it's a netbook with an 8.9 inch screen. The Dell for "under $300!" is a Windows 98 (Huh? a twelve year old OS?) refurb unit that would serve no one well with its out of date browser and native inability to install USB devices. It's also WAY under $300 - $175, which even at that price is too expensive. This article never should have posted. Very disappointing.
