Reviews: Products for the Skeptics Out There

Calling all skeptics! You have gone through life hardly believing a claim; or maybe you once believed anything and everything, but over the years, experience has left you jaded. You see advertisements on T.V. (As Seen On TV) or in magazines and you scoff, thinking that only fools could believe such too-perfect promises. Well, you are hardly alone in your skepticism. In fact, many people have this sort of outlook on life, and especially hold this view towards products new to the market. You think companies are just trying to make a few million dollars off of poor schmucks like you or me who are still willing to hope. And while some are, there are others out there who truly want to solve problems and help people, and have innovated something that will. We have found more than a few.

These one-time skeptics either caved-in to friends and family or decided to take a chance on just one more product, and found themselves on the other side of the fence -- they are now believers. So, when you take these sharings with a grain of salt (because that's what you do), try to remember that these people were once skeptics like you! But, that was before they tried these products...

digital frameDIGITAL PICTURE FRAME!
Wi-Fi Digital Frames (from $130) | Under $50 | Digital Keychains

"Digital picture frames seemed a little silly to me, I have to admit. But when a family member got me one for Christmas, I figured I would give it a whirl, and sell it on Ebay if I didn't like it. Let me tell you, I LOVE the digital picture frame! It's a great conversational piece and allows you to display hundreds of pictures rather than just one in a frame. I find that with digital cameras, I take a lot more pictures than I would if I had to pay to develop them...and, I don't want to print them all out. So, the digital picture frame is really a winning product from my perspective and one every home needs! " -Billie Criswell

wen hair careWEN HAIR CARE!
Try Wen Hair Care (from $35 for 3)

"When I first heard about this cleansing conditioner, I was extremely skeptical. I didn't think there was anything that could tame my unruly, curly hair. No one I knew had heard of the product, much less tried it. I went out on a limb and bought $100.00 worth of products from QVC. To my surprise, it worked. My hair has never been healthier. Though I hated to spend that amount of money on haircare, for someone with my kind of problems, it was worth every penny. I highly suggest this product to any skeptics. Just be sure to follow the instructions." -Meka L. Jones

APPLE IPADTHE APPLE IPAD!

"I used to be skeptical of the Apple iPad until I tried one. I thought that it was nothing more than a large cell phone that was incapable of making phone calls. Boy, was I wrong. We are easily able to add onto her list of words she can identify with objects, body parts, or colors. Your Baby Can Read program has helped us see that young children are equipped with the ability to learn quickly while having fun." -Eileen Kleidon

clearasil stayclearCLEARASIL STAYCLEAR TREATMENT CREAM!
Try Clearasil Stayclear Treatment Cream (from $4.99)

"I've had a long history of acne, and during that time I've sampled a vast assortment of medications, to very limited success. Nothing worked. I had largely resigned to genetics, when a colossal outbreak right before a big date forced me into a desperate search for relief. Off I ran, to the nearest drugstore and asked for the strongest over-the-top solution they had. This pocket-sized cream from Clearasil with 10% benzoyl peroxide was the answer. My hopes were not high initially, but within two days, the largest pimple had receded to barely a bump and my complexion improved tremendously. I've since continued to use it whenever flareups occur, with great results.
Call me a skeptic no more." -Min Tsui

"Let's face it -- when you sweat, you leave stains that are often hard to remove in the wash. Lady Speed Stick Stainguard claims to stop those embarrassing underarm yellow stains. I acquired a sample recently and put it to the test. I used to be a skeptic until I tried Lady Speed Stick Stainguard, but now I must admit that I am sold on the product. This antiperspirant works magic. Why? No yellow gummy stains in the underarm area after wearing a brand-new white T-shirt all day long. Plus, the product stops wetness and odor." -BB Lee

magic bulletTHE MAGIC BULLET!
Try the Magic Bullet (from $45.95)

"Seriously. What kind of product does all that dicing, chopping and blending so easily? While you can't do all the things the infomercial claims without stopping to wash out one of your limited number of blending cups, this little device does pack the power reserved for most food processors into a product with a much smaller countertop footprint. I fully appreciate this every morning when I blend protein powder with milk and blueberries for breakfast in my efficiency apartment -- though, my aunt from out-of-town remains unconvinced of the Magic Bullet's sheer awesomeness." -Kate Pesich

t3 wet to dry flat ironT3 WET TO DRY TOURMALINE FLAT IRON!
Try the T3 Wet/Dry Flat Iron (from $95)

"The first time I saw the Wet/Dry Flat Iron made by T3, I cringed. I was watching QVC and saw the host flat-ironing one of the model's hair. Her hair was damp! I thought her hair would fall right out on camera. Instead, her hair seemed perfectly smooth and even, shiny, on the air. Then, I got a call to be a hair model -- I was going to be demonstrating the T3 Wet/Dry Flat Iron on QVC. I was excited to work with this product but also scared that my hair would be ruined. I didn't know what to expect. I have naturally wavy hair and a lot of it. On the air, the T3 representative sprayed my hair down with water so that she could show, on air, the work of the iron. She demonstrated the straightening power of the iron while explaining how it cut down on precious time by drying the hair as it straightened it. My hair came out of the iron soft, extra shiny and straight. I am now a T3 fan and use the Wet/Dry iron faithfully." -Roey Ebert

pain freeTHE BOOK PAIN FREE!
Pick-up a copy of Pain Free (from $10 for new copies)

"Pete Egoscue, author of Pain Free, makes a lot of outrageous claims about his method's ability to ease your chronic pain without surgery or drugs. My husband has 'walked crooked,' suffered from back pain and limped for the past 20 years. After two weeks of following the Egoscue method, he is no longer hunched over, his shoulders are straight, the limp is gone and best of all, he has NO back pain at all. It is NOT a gimmick; it is not too good to be true. Read the book, follow his advice and you too can be Pain Free."

meltdown by vpxMELTDOWN BY VPX!
Start the MeltDown by VPX (from $30 for capsules)
Intensify your calorie-burn with other MeltDown products

"Ever since the FDA banned ephedrine as an ingredient in diet pills, the nutritional supplement industry has been searching for an effective "fat-burner." As an avid exercise and workout enthusiast, I am aware that the supplement industry is bursting with companies making outrageous and unsubstantiated claims regarding the effectiveness of their products, so I was naturally skeptical when I was introduced to Meltdown, from VPX Labs. Yet, my personal experience is that Meltdown works. Meltdown is not a diet pill. Though the stimulant effect of Meltdown does suppress my appetite; I benefit most by taking a pre-workout Meltdown. With Meltdown, my workouts are longer and more intense. As a result I burn more calories, increase lean muscle mass and lose fat. Meltdown by itself is not going to burn fat, it is not a miracle, but it will help you get a better workout." -Doug Donald
earthbox gardenEARTHBOX GARDENS!
Grow your own Earthbox Gardens (from under $50)

"I was a skeptic when I first saw the Earthbox and how easy they said it was to grow veggies. After the fourth viewing and something telling me to give it a try, I went ahead and bought two of them to see if what they were saying was for real. Eight years and 10 Earthboxes later, they have proven to work. No weeding, no hoeing, just plant, water and watch these little babies grow in a matter of days. When you water, there is a grate that the water sinks down into where the dirt does not penetrate. When the plant roots finally reach the bottom and find water, they no longer grow down -- only up. You will be amazed at how little time it takes to have your first veggies coming in. I have grown hundreds of pounds of tomatoes, green beans, bell peppers, chili peppers, jalapenos, fruit, flowers and herbs. You name it I have tried it. There is simply not a better way of growing your own. And, if you are tired of paying outrageous prices for veggies in the supermarket, try your green thumb with these smart looking mini gardens." -Gary Boyd

barkoffBARKOFF!
Try BarkOff
($9.99)

"I have two dogs and sometimes, they bark incessantly. They bark at the mailman, they bark at joggers, and mostly, they bark at other dogs. I'm really not into info-commercials, but I kept seeing this gadget that keeps dogs quiet. I was skeptical, but since it was so cheap, I thought I would give it a try. It's automatic so there are no buttons to push and there are no wires or plugs. Once your dog barks, an ultrasonic, inaudible sound to human ears goes off. Hearing the high frequency pitch, it stops barking. It's safe, effective, and completely humane. The Barkoff really works." -Susan Lane

"One day I ran out of shampoo and a friend offered to pick me up a bottle of shampoo and conditioner on their way over. They brought me Garnier Fructis; I had never tried it before. It smelled great, and after just three washes, I was hooked. I have been using it for a year now and even tried their hair color. My hair has grown an astonishing 12 inches in eight months. Not because it just grows fast (because it does), but it ceased breaking off. My hair really is stronger, healthier, and more luxurious." -Chaz Sugar

air purifierAIR PURIFIER!
Try an air purifier in your home or office (from under $40)

"I have severe allergies to many outdoor allergens. I have always been told by people that I should try an air purifier, but I figured I was going to suffer every spring anyway and that this is just another thing to spend money on. A friend...told me I could use his for a little while to see if it helps me. By the end of the first week of using it I didn't wake up with a stuffy nose or a dried out nasal cavity. I went to Lowes and bought my own. It actually has been helping me tremendously. I never bought in to all that 'it keeps out so-much percent of allergens,' but once I tried it, I was beyond satisfied. I have been using my air purifier for over three years now and I can tell you that it has made my springs much more tolerable. It also puts out a little purring sound that puts me right to sleep." -Joshua Harris

A year ago, I surrendered and signed-up for my very own Facebook account to view some pictures of my friend's new baby. There is another product which SHOULD be top of this list. There is a new company marketing a new sunburn product and it WORKS! As a pharmacist near the beaches, I am often asked for something for burn relief. Few times in my career does a new product SURPASS its claims, but SunBurn911 is one of them. I have had several customers who were badly burned use SunBurn911 and tell me it works effectively and lasts up to 6 hours with very minimal peeling. I even had an older patient who opened a hot radiator and had significant steam burns who used it and had great results. They have a new all natural sunscreen and bugscreen coming out. Can't wait for those!

Louise, I agree. Pill Pockets have turned out to be heaven sent. My dogs are not on meds full time but after surgery or when they need to be on antibiotics, the Pill Pockets are fantastic. They take the hassle of having to force pills down your dogs throat. That not only stresses out you but your dog as well. Who ever invented the Pill Pocket deserves a medal as far as I am concerned!!! Plus, like you said the dogs love it, and I know my dogs scarf it down and when they are on meds and I pull out the Pill Pockets they think they are getting a treat. I think all vets need to recommend it to all of their patients owners. I know they make them for cats as well.

Since there is a Pet Product on the list I would also suggest 'Pill Pockets' to treat and medicate your dog or cat at the same time. Both my dogs and cats absolutely love them and it takes the pain out of giving medicine to your pets. You just put the pill in the hole and pinch the top shut. They are high quality and can be found at most vets or even the PetSmart stores and online. If you're like me and have pets on medicine, even long term give them a try. What a great way to take the stress out of pilling our pets.

My Baby Can Read is not a product that works. It may work in the beginning, but in 5 -6 years your child will fall behind all the other students. It is teaching the children to memorize the words. While that is part of reading, decoding and phonics are the first steps. I was taught to read by memorizing words. It does not work. What happens when you see a word you don't know? Also My Baby Can Read increases your child's chances of having ADD or ADHD. Scientific research has shown that allowing children under the age of 2 to watch television increases the chance they will have ADD. Also having a electronic voice (any voice on television, radio, computer is electronic) has been linked to speech problems. Here is an idea, read to your child. It helps create a bond, a shared interest, helps your child become literate, prevents ADD and speech problems.

Sorry Amanda. As a speech pathologist, I'd love to know where you got the idea that listening to an electronic voice can bring on speech problems in a young child. There are no studies to that effect. Also, using a program like My Baby Can Read along with actually reading to your child is the best of both worlds. It is always wise to limit viewing a CD or TV to a minimum but no need to restrict it completely.

You're impressed with Magic Bullet because you make your morning smoothie with it. What else do you do with it?

I bought this thing and took it back a week later. I can slice and dice by hand quicker and with more constistancey. It claims to make tuna and egg salad spreads. What it makes is a tuna or egg flavored mush.

The only thing it did that I liked was make the smoothie, and I have a 28 year old blender that does that, and it does more than one at a time.

Magic Bullet is a waste of time for anybody who isn't getting paid to promote it.

I bought the Magic Bullet and was very disapointed in it. I was following the dirctions to a tee and all I got was liqued onions in the bottom (next) to the blade and the ones at the top were the same as when I put them in. This was well pass the 10 seconds they said it would take. It more like one min. I tried many things including almost everything they did and none of it worked liked their's did. My son said all those things have the soupped up moters in them so it looks like they work but when you get it, it doesn't. I sold mine at my yard sale for a small fraction of what I bought it for.

I usually don't comment on these marketing things, but- NIVEA- is THE best. Probably alot has to do with the fact it was invented by, patented by, the Germans. Their secret? They don't DILUTE their original formula down-WITH WATER. Too many American Co's do- to eeke out that last $$ from the consumer. Will die using Nivea. THE CREAM of the Crop- in moisterizers and cellulite reducers.
