Unexpectedly Unique Coats

"A coat less common" seems to be the theme as we approach year's end - or perhaps just calling them unique coats would do. While we're all for classic, no-fuss coats that take the work out of winter dressing (who needs that drama when it's 20 degrees, anyway?), we love a shot of artsy, playful inspiration to change things up a bit, too.

The solution? A unique coat that evolves from the basic by incorporating the unexpected, like architectural styling, asymmetrical angles and ruffles galore, all while maintaining the very necessary femininity of a stellar cold weather topper. Here, a few we love:

What were we saying about architecture? The sharply angled hem of this L.A.M.B. Plaid Jacket ($445) gives an edgy twist to what would otherwise be quite down to earth and sweet. The black-and-white check print plays perfect foil to the paneled hem, wide collar and angled cuffs. Somehow, it just works.

We're blown away by the simple beauty of this Leifsdottir Wool Blend Coat ($598). With its lean cut, cinched in waist and pretty tonal ribbon and decorative button details, it strongly resembles a dress. Throw it on over a tunic and skinny jeans for a polished cold weather look.

On most-wanted lists everywhere this season is something coated in plush faux fur. This Sisters Tie-Waist Faux Fur Jacket ($96) exemplifies what's so great about the fake stuff: it's sinfully soft, irresistible to the touch and guaranteed to keep you cozy all season long. This, with a pair of jeans and over the knee boots, will see you through in perpetual style.

Look sharp in this stunning White House Black Market Military-Inspired Peacoat ($188). Beautifully tailored and lightly detailed with gold buttons, this coat takes its inspiration from the bridge coats worn by naval officers. This ladylike interpretation is a winner.
