Have you heard the great news? Prince William finally announced his engagement to Kate Middleton with a beautiful sapphire ring! But there's even better news. There are several look-alike rings out there that you can call your own.
Let's take a look at the back story of this ring, first. The ring Prince William used to ask for Kate's hand in marriage once belonged to the late Princess Diana. But Princess Diana was not its only previous owner. After Princess Diana's tragic death, Prince William's younger brother Prince Harry chose the band as his memento of his mother, while Prince William chose her 18K yellow gold Cartier Tank Francaise watch that she used to teach him how to read the time. Prince Harry happily gave up the ring to his brother for the engagement, realizing that it was what Diana would have wanted. Both brothers view the passing of the ring as a tribute to their mother.
Now, the ring itself is as lovely as the story. It is a large, oval Ceylon sapphire surrounded by 14 round diamonds and set in 18K of white gold. When Prince Charles purchased it for Princess Diana back in 1981, it cost him over $40,000. Imagine its worth today! You don't have to have over $40K on-hand, or be royalty to own one of these. There are a handful of look-alike rings out there that sport a friendlier price tag. Here are some favorites we found:

Fun Factoid:
While we're on the topic of sapphires, thought it might be fun to share a fun fact with you! Did you know that rubies are red sapphires?
eHow says, "Sapphires and rubies are closely related and are formed from the same material, corundum. Sapphires come in a variety of colors but, in essence, a red sapphire is a ruby. So-called 'fancy' sapphires range in color from yellow to green to pink to violet."

I'm going to hold out for my Prince Charming to put a real blue diamond on my ring finger! That should keep me fairly safe from engagement since I'm not sure blue diamonds exist, and I won't settle for blue diamond chipletts.

This is Unbelievable. I have the Exact Ring, My Daughter, Gave it to Me as a Christmas Gift. Mine is in 18kt Gold, with 12 Diamonds, surrounding the Dark Blue Sapphire. I Love it, and it was once Owned but Hardly worn by Her. It was a Birthday Gift, for Her, Her Husband and I bought it, to give to Her, He then bought Her a Bigger, Aqua Marine,Round with Chocolate and White Diamonds. So that is my Previously Owned Story! I am so Happy, I Love It! I am Wearing It right now. guess Princess Dianna and i had Similar Tastes! Hope Prince william, and Kate, will be Very Happy! GIGI

Who in the world would want to wear an engagement ring from such a troubled couple---honestly. Do better, William

I understand the reason behind using Diana's ring, but I wish they'd gotten Kate a new one. But I think that it's a good thing considering the economy... Not like they lack money

Although it is a very nice ring.. I*ll take a diamond engagement ring anyday.. To me her ring looks more like a cocktail ring rather then an engagement ring.. and I know it was Princess Dianas but I really do prefer a traditional diamond .. just my opinion..

I hate that they are now calling it the "Kate Middleton Ring". It was Diana's ring and always will be and should be, in my personal opinion, acknowledged as such. Personally, I don't believe it should even be on Kate Middleton's finger. If she wears Diana's tiara for the wedding, I will probably scream. She is not nor will she ever live up to Diana who, even with her flaws, was an amazing and wonderful woman. I can't believe Harry actually gave up his memento of his mother to his older brother. I wish he had kept it because I think it would have been more to Diana's liking for the ring to be on Harry's wife's hand than on the next Queen's hand seeing as her relationship with the current Queen mum wasn't the best. Diana is probably rolling over in her grave with all that has happened since her death.

As I recall, Prince Diana's engagement ring was not a saffire, like they said on NPR It was an emerald surrounded by small daimonds

William gave her his late mother's ring, b/c he was honoring the memory of his mother. Kate should just say Thank-You and keep it to herself if she doesn't like it . It's better than letting it rot in a drawer somewhere.

Hi! You people are mean! You shouldn't try to degrade Princess Diana's ring for a cheap look a like just to make a profit! Make a picture copy of the ring but please don't try to make you into a Princess Diana. Please respect the dead! Thanks! Jack

Unless it's an 18-carat sapphire, with 14 diamonds surrounding it, these aren't even close to Lady Di's ring...

It was, indeed, a deep blue sapphire, 18-carats worth!
