Beauty Commandments: Nails

Many women yearn for healthy, beautiful nails. Achieving that look can be a little tricky because we use our nails for everyday tasks like peeling an orange or opening a soda can. These daily tasks can cause your nails to break and your polish to smudge (annoying right!?). Some of us like to turn to our favorite nail salon for a quick fix but this can get pricey. So, what are some of the best, drugstore products that you can use to help remedy the situation? We recently turned to 10 women to find out their secrets for maintaining pretty nails. I have to admit that I was taking notes. One woman even recommended using a familiar type of laundry detergent to clean your nails! Read on to see what it is.

Be sure to check out our other Beauty Commandments: Face and Pretty Lips.

Thou Shall Use Different Nail Polish Colors
"Forget the boring old French manicure or your clear nail polish. The days of the crazy colors are here. Purples, Teals, even Golds are the hottest colors of the season...but pretty much anything is a go this Fall and heading into 2011. Being able to stand out from the crowd of conformers is one of the most fashionable things you can do right now. No need to be matchy-matchy. Let your nails make a statement." - Bess

Thou Shall Maintain Clean Nails
"I am honestly embarrassed to admit some of my nail secrets but hey, I have gorgeous nails and you'd never guess I have my baby's Boudreaux's Butt Paste for Diaper Rash and laundry detergent to thank. Because I am a part-time model, I need to keep my nails manicured and spectacular looking just in case I get called for an audition. I have no time for a weekly salon manicure, so I do it myself. I use Tide laundry detergent with bleach to soak my nails in. I mix the Tide with warm water and gently use a nail brush to buff my nails. They almost look as if I had a French manicure when I'm done. My cuticles look fabulous because I rub my son's butt cream on them nightly. I use Boudreaux's Butt Paste for Diaper Rash that comes in a huge tub. I leave it on my vanity and share it with the baby, occasionally. It keeps my cuticles moisturized and prevents them from cracking. Who would have thought?!" - Roey

Who knew these had double duty?!

Thou Shalt Not Be Afraid To Wear Fake Nails
"Yes! I said fake nails from the drug store! Products such as Nailene and Revlon offer wonderful fake nails that are strong, made to fit and already polished. All you have to do is glue them on and file them. They give you enough in the package to last you several weeks. They are easy, quick and only cost around $4.99 to $5.99. The best part is that you can replace a nail easily, should one break. This will save you money from running back to your manicurist and you will always have nice looking nails." - Nancy

Thou Shall Layer Thy Polishes
"Layering your nail polish creates a rich look that is only achieved through layering polishes before they dry. Although counter-intuitive, placing that final top coat on before your color dries creates the salon shine we all crave. Bonus! Chipping is far less likely when the two polishes combine. I recommend Sally Hansen's Nail Growth Miracle Salon Strength Treatment, it strengthens weak nails and shines." - Genevieve

Thou S
hall Take The Plunge For Dry Nails
"You've heard of the Polar Bear Club? People diving into icy water in frigid temperatures for apparently no reason. Well, a stylist tip used to fast-dry nails of models on photo shoots uses a similar method, but for a good reason. Fresh nail polish hardens to the touch in about two minutes. But, they are still vulnerable to dents and scratches. After waiting the initial two minutes, plunge the nails into a bowl of ice water for just a few seconds. The method is kind of like a flash, frozen instantaneous dry. Seems crazy but it works." - Cathleen

Thou Shall Use Coconut Oil
"Next time you're waiting in line at the grocery store, picking at your cuticles, turn around and head to the organics aisle for the coconut oil. Relief is on the way for less than ten dollars and your cuticles will thank you. Dry, torn cuticles grow dry, weak fingernails. Lose the habit of picking at cuticles with a daily application of coconut oil and you will see the gradual blossom of ten beautiful fingernails nourished with the moisturizing benefits of coconut oil, which also happens to contain anti-fungal and antibacterial properties." - Kristen

Thou Shall Avoid Stained Nails
"Nails stained by a dark polish? Perhaps slightly yellowed from too much time in a tanning bed or the sun? Brighten up those talons by brushing them with the same whitening toothpaste you use on your teeth! My favorite is the new Crest 3D Whitening. Apply it to your nails and let it sit for 10 minutes. Scrub a little (you'll want to use a different brush than you use on your teeth!) and rinse with warm water. Your nails will be bright and stain free!" - Chelsea

Thou Shall Fancy Up Thy Nail File
"Avoid using the typical emery boards and metal files, and allow your nails to experience the gentler and more accurate machinations of a glass or crystal nail file. The benefits? Easier clean-up, durability, and uniformly trimmed nails without the abrasiveness and rough edges." - Iseul

Thou Shall Nourish Yourself

"The greatest thing I ever discovered for my thin, brittle, constantly broken nails was to nourish them from the inside. Here's the lowdown: Calcium + Vitamin D, twice a day, plus one Biotin pill a day. Replenish your nails to make them stronger, harder, less breakable than you ever thought possible. When used in tandem with a balanced diet, these nutrients and vitamins work with your body. Biotin improves metabolism of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, while Calcium is essential for strong bones and nails. The Vitamin D aids the absorption of calcium. These two little pills are my absolute necessity for healthy nails and I am proud to say that mine are in great condition these days!" - Wendy

Thou Shall Wear Rubber Gloves
"No one really loves to clean-up, but since it's a must, don't let chores ruin a perfectly good manicure. Invest in and don a cute pair of rubber gloves when it's time to scrub-a-dub your place. This seems like common sense until you forget to do it. Cleaning agents are often abrasive and tend to dry out the skin and nails. Most labels will warn that direct contact is not recommended. Heed the manufacturer's advice. Not only will the manicure last longer, but you will be protected from potential skin irritation." - Talia

I use Vicks Vapor Rub to clear up nail fungus that sometimes accumulates under nail polish in the summer. Put a big glob on the infected nail at night and slip on a cotton sock. Do this for about a week. You can do all your nails for a healthy glowing shine. Someone told me the menthol kills the fungus.

I've learned that after I wash my hands I blot, not rub them dry, then apply lotion.....Has really made a difference in preventing dryness.

Do the hair and nail vitimans that are sold in stores really work? I have used them for a while--and have seen that my nails look a little better. But--is it a waste of money to buy these or are they of value to me?
    Thank You,

    Evelyn,

I have found that the individual vitamines work much better than using those made just for hair or nails. I use vitamine C, B & E and then take a Boitin capsule daily. I think I may also start taking the calcium and vitamine D as mentioned in the article, as this combination that I mentioned above is really taken for my hair, and boy does it help it. I actually started growing new hair a month or two after starting the conbination, but it also helped my nails too. And best of all, I felt better too. This combination of the B,C & E with the Biotin was given to me by a hairdresser years ago. She got it from another customer who had cancer and lost her hair. Her doctor told her to take this combination of vitamines to regrow her hair faster. I was very satisfied with the results.

I have found that soaking in lemon juice and them maming a paste of the lemon juice and baking soda (the kind that is in the frig) but let it come to room temperature, and place it on each nail top and underneath with an old small paint brush for 10 minutes will take the brown or yellow out GREAT!!!! But I have yet to find a top coat that is really UV (sun) rated. It is a shame to do all this to your beautiful nails (leaving them natural), no polish, if you can't keep tem white from the sun. I do use gloves for cleaning, and am not a sun worshiper, just driving can yellow them again. Help, any ideas????

I use Kiss artificial nails. I use a brush on glue that I buy at Sally Beauty Supply that is an absolute must for anyone who wears the glue on nails. One is always going to pop off somewhere, I just keep the little bottle in my purse, it is about the size of a liquid paper bottle. Its quick, easy and best of all, there is really no mess, just lift the nail as much as you can, slide the brush under and make sure it contacts both the inside of the fake nake surface and the surface of your nail. Press together and hold for 5-10 seconds and you are ready to go.

To dry my nails after I polish them, I just use the blow dryer on the lowest heat and blower setting and blow my nails for about 1-2 minutes, just like they do in the nail shop. In winter they use a small heater, in summer, they use a small cool air fan at my local nail shop, so in summer, I use the blow dryer on the no heat setting so I don't smother while drying my nails. I am all excited about trying that ice water method too that was mentioned in the article.

For my top coat, I use "Love My Nails" clear. It says on the bottle "For that deep wet look" and boy, is it glossy. It looks wet when it is dry, I just love it, and the best thing, it is so cheap, about a buck for a bottle of it! I like to paint my own color on my glue on nails, and I use the plain nails with oval tips, I have never liked the square tips on my hands, my nails are enlongated and kind of pinched together looking, and that square look makes my fingers look like they have been chopped off. The Kiss nails that I use have 200 tips for under $6, now do the math and see how much you save over the nail salon! And these nails are not thick, no one thinks my nails are fake, they look like natural nails because they are just about the thickness of natural healthy nails. The best thing is your nails are always ready and look nice if you have company drop in or you have to make a sudden unexpected trip.

I facillitate a program called Look Good Feel Better for ladies actively involved in chemo and or radiation. Sometime the drugs dry out their skin so badly, I tell them (and anyone with dry skin) to blot their skin dry with their wrung out wash cloth WHILE STILL IN THE SHOWER, and apply lotion immediately. Be careful not to get the lotion on the shower floor. The skin is still warm and moist from the shower and by leaving the skin slightly damo, the lotion seals in the loisture so much better. Water, of course, IS the best hydrant. (those who are being treated with radiation, avoid the radiated area BUT discuss this with your doctor first.)
