Lego Advent Calendar - 24 Days Of Fun

Lego Advent CalendarMy children are obsessed with their advent calendars. They leap out of bed every morning at 6:15 (yes, that's 6:15 in the A.M.) and race to open the little doors and see what's inside. Advent calendars are a fun way to count down to the holiday and a great Christmas tradition for kids . But they are a bit of a chore for Mommy. Finding small ornaments or toys to fit in the compartments can be difficult, and I'm not filling them with candy because, well, they open them at 6:15 in the morning. But I've just discovered the awesome Lego Advent Calendar (from $35). Problem solved. More exciting than the simple paper kind, less work than the compartment kind and far less sugary than 24 days of chocolate!

The Lego Advent Calendar is a specially designed box with 24 different windows to open. Behind each window is a small item for kids to build. In this 2010 City Lego Advent Calendar ($35) the items include: a snowman, a mini train and a christmas tree. The set also includes 6 minifigures. Kids age 5 and up can build the daily surprise then integrate it into any kind of Lego scene they devise.

If your little builder is king of the castle, he or she might like the 2010 Kingdom Lego Advent Calendar (from $59). Themed around a medieval Lego kingdom, minibuilds include a dungeon, catapult and a wizard. Wrap up the Lego Kingdoms King's Castle set ($100) and put it under the tree for Christmas Day and your kids will spend the rest of the month putting all the advent pieces to work in their realm.

Each year the City Lego Advent Calendar varies a bit, so you can find calendars from previous years that have different pieces and figures in them. The 2009 City Lego Advent Calendar (from $72) includes 9 minifigures and items like a quiver and crossbow. There are specialty themed sets from other years as well that are still available through online retailers. The 2009 Pirate Lego Advent Calendar (from $72) includes items like a treasure chest and a mermaid. And girls might enjoy this 2007 Belville Lego Advent Calendar ($105) that includes a fairy and a mini tea set. For another girly themed advent calendar, check out the Polly Pocket Advent Calendar ($20).
