Home Organization Made Easy

I love the beginning of a new year. It's time to let old, bad habits die, old grudges begone and anything that does not work in your life fall by the waste side. One of the things that I love to do at the start of the new year is a massive cleaning and purging for my home organization. I love starting the new year knowing that everything is in its place and that the things that we don't need or use can be donated to someone who will appreciate them.

While hopefully you are not a candidate to be on A&E's popular show, Hoarders, maybe these tips for home organization will be able to help you out. Here are some tips for organizing your home. A little organization goes a long way!

Clear Clutter
Clutter is the enemy of any organized home. I call myself very organized and I am still amazed by how quickly clutter can build up when I don't stay on top of it. Every few days I go through the common areas of my home and try to de-clutter. My motto is there is a place for everything and everything should be in its place. As I am walking around, I put things in different categories: throw away, recycle, donate and put away. If you do this frequently it will help to minimize clutter. Also, don't let your fridge get cluttered. Periodically go through your refrigerator and toss food that is past its expiration date.

Use Bins
With three kids, it is a must that I keep track of mittens, hats, gloves, and scarves in an orderly way. Inside of our hallway closet we have a bin assigned to each child where they can store all of their cold weather accessories. Bins are great for keeping things organized and together. Don't be tempted to just throw everything in a bin. Make sure that you put things in neatly so that they are easier to find.

Put it away!

Label Everything

Labels really help to keep me and my home organized. From whole wheat flour to coats and shoes, I try to label as much as I can. The labels that I use for my kids' things are from Mabel's Labels. I love their Colourful Label Out Loud Tag Mates. They are are laundry safe, peel and stick clothing labels that require no ironing or sewing. You easily apply the label to clothing care tags, your child's beloved Pillow Pet or their books. These labels rock for keep track of kids' things on the bus, at school or camp and at play dates.

Stay On Top Of Laundry
I have polled several of my friends (some a little more organized challenged than others) and laundry seems to be a very common problem. Laundry can be down right overwhelming when you have tons to do and when not dealt with it will exacerbate disorganization in your home. Laundry seems to grow at an exponential rate in my house and I find the only way that I can keep it at bay is to keep on top of it. I do laundry every other day, using a high efficiency washer and dryer and I have the kids get in on the action. All of my kids have their own laundry basket and are tasked with hanging up their clothes, folding them and putting them away. Even my littlest one, who is almost two, can help.
