Trendsetting 101: Bold Colors

From bright citrus hues to vivid jewel tones, bold colors bring on undoubtable personality, sass and energy. Add of-the-moment style to this as this trend, which was all over the Spring runways this year, continues to go strong this Summer. When it comes to your outfits, do you enjoy full-on color or do you prefer just a splash? Or maybe you hardly dabble with bolds and brights. Wherever you fall on the spectrum, here's some advice on how you can work the trend to match your personal style.

Trendsetting 101 is our new weekly series, centered on showing you how to wear the trends of the season. Come back next week for advice on another hot trend.

1. Go All the Way Bold:

Wearing two or more colors at a time is so in right now! When the colors are complementary, the look is gorgeous and unparalleled. Google "color wheel fashion" and you can read up on colors that go well together. Don't want to worry about that? Colorblock dresses offer ready-set combos.

2. Wear it to Work:

You don't have to shy away from bolds when you're on the job. A neutral hue will tone down your chosen punch of color and create a trendy, yet professional 9-to-5 look. I actually like this tip outside the office setting too, especially if you aren't used to sporting such vibrant colors.

Our picks:
- Adam Skirt, $177 + Topshop Nude Top, $70
- J.Crew Dress, $198 + Silence & Noise Blazer, $78
- Ralph Lauren Tank, $39 + Worn Cargo Pants, $17

Shop all: Bright Clothing | Nude-Colored Clothing

3. Choose Subtle Shoes:

Bold printed dresses are so fun for the summer. Because they make such a statement, avoid another popping or actually any shoe that vies for attention. The focus should be on that killer dress. Nude pumps or black sandals, versatile in any woman's closet, are the perfect matches.

Our picks:
- Milly Multicolor Dress, $325 + Seville Sandals, $215
- London Times Dress, $54 + Antonio M. Pumps, $90
- Aryn K. Dress, $89 + Self Esteem Sandals, $35

Shop all: Bright Dresses | Nude Heels | Black Sandals

4. Add in a Muted Pattern

Break up your solid bolds with non-bright patterns like animal prints in a black, brown, gray hues are a sure bet. This will quiet down any striking color you may have on. Neutral stripes and designs have the same calming effect as well.

Our picks:
- Topshop Tank, $12 + Kate Spade Cardigan, $177
- Bailey Mini, $90 + EXPRESS Neutral Shirt, $35
- Ellen Tracy Dress, $89 + Lucky Brand Scarf, $15

Shop all: Bright Tops | Animal Print Cardigans

5. Stick to Accessories

If you're not comfortable wearing pops of color (maybe you don't want much attention on your body, for example) don't bypass this talked-about trend of the summer. Wear your monochromes, but then add some energy (i.e. a flashy carryall or a vivid necklace)!

Our picks:
- Dooney & Bourke Bag, $218 + Jeans, $37 + Tee, $25
- ALDO Necklace, $18 + CK Shell, $30
- Steve Madden Red Flats, $70 + Element Dress, $40
