Summer Hair Care Essentials

Frying is for eggs, ladies - not for your hair. Sadly, summer doesn't care about that and will wreak all sorts of havoc on your mane. That sunshine that looks so gorgeous and feels so good on your skin can actually strip away the natural oils on your hair. Chlorine will do the same, and if you value your pool time you probably know all about that. Fortunately, there's plenty you can do to restore your hair and get it into great shape in time for fall.

Be aware that what you use during winter doesn't pass muster at this time of year. Opt for an ultra-hydrating conditioner, such as Alterna's Summer Hair After-Sun Hair Quench ($20). Its gel-like consistency feels refreshing, but it's the mineral- and vitamin-rich formula that ultimately makes the biggest difference, giving your hair a softer texture and preventing environmental damage.

Since chlorine and heat are so drying, extra hydration is crucial. While that primarily comes from conditioners and treatment masks, a rich shampoo can make a big difference, too. Try one like Kiehl's Since 1851 Olive Fruit Oil Nourishing Shampoo ($28). It's rich in natural avocado oil, olive fruit oil and lemon extract, a triple threat that works to rehydrate parched hair, whether due to excessive sun exposure or heat styling.

Ever notice how your hair seems to frizz like some kind of wild beast no matter what you do to it? Yeah, summer has a tendency to do that no matter how great your hair looks at home. We're big fans of John Frieda Frizz-Ease Moisture Barrier Hair Spray ($5.95), a cheap thrill that works like a charm. Not only does it seal in moisture and prevent the dreaded frizzies, it also contains sunscreen to protect your locks from harmful UV rays.

Dryness isn't the only issue your hair may suffer during summer. If you color your hair, you're at risk for a fast fade with repeated exposure to chlorine and salt. Add a shot of protection and even a little shine courtesy of L'Oreal's Colorvive UV Spray ($4.99), a glycerin-rich treatment that filters UV light to prevent accelerated color loss.

Not every day is a tropical vacation, but you can still fake the look! Try John Masters Organics Sea Mist Sea Salt Spray ($16.50) for that sexy, tousled, beach-chic hair you love. It's infused with lavender essential oil, which combats the dehydrating effects of sea salt and adds a luscious fragrance, to boot.

If possible, avoid overdoing it on the heat styling tools, and give your hair at least a day (or more) between shampoos. Natural, tousled hair is so chic for summer, anyway!
