Best Things to Buy in January

Welcome to 2012, AOL Shoppers. It's a brand new year and I fully intend to live it to the fullest (with plenty of shopping thrown in for good measure). Today we're talking about the best things to buy in January.

Now that the holiday season has passed and retailers are prepping for Valentine's Day and stocking up on spring merchandise, you can count on loads of tempting deals. When it comes to the best things to buy in January, there are plenty of options. I've highlighted eight of them below.

Outerwear

It may seem odd to buy a coat or jacket in the middle of the winter, but with such tempting prices it'll be hard to resist. Thousands of retailers place coats, jackets and other outerwear -- including gloves, hats and scarves -- on sale after Christmas. Snag a few things up right now and you'll still get to wear them throughout the next few months. If you buy lighter jackets, those can often be worn through spring. Currently trending are military-inspired designs, capes, faux fur-lined outerwear and duffel coats.

Jewelry

Now that late December holidays have passed, retailers are making way for Valentine's Day jewelry. That means steep discounts on necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings that were marketed in November and December. Jewelry that's still perfectly beautiful (just not adorned with hearts and other Valentine's Day-esque embellishments). Buy now to gift for Valentine's Day or purchase a little something for yourself. Right now, statement jewelry, metals and geometric designs are really on trend.

Health/Fitness Products

There's no better time to whip yourself into shape than in the months of January. Let the thousands who've made a commitment to health inspire your own journey. Whether you plan to lose weight, maintain weight, gain muscle or simply want to eat better, you won't regret the decision.

Stay on top of your New Year's fitness goals with the help of a journal or a pedometer that tells you just how much exercise you're getting everyday. I'm in love with the FitBit Ultra ($99), a wireless pedometer that tells you how many steps you've taken, miles walked and stairs climbed. It even gives you access to an online community that lets you keep track of your weight, food/sleep habits and beyond.

"It may seem odd to buy a coat or jacket in the middle of the winter"

No, it's really not at all in the slightest, particularly with children, when will retailers get that?
Aside from the whole Christmas thing, some years a child can go through 2-3 coats! From sledding shreds to placing them too close to wood stoves, bad things happen to coats and people will seek to buy immediate replacements when, you know, it's cold outside and stuff.
