Three Helpful Gadgets for Your Home

If you read this blog regularly, you know that I'm a big fan of gadgets; I am, by training, a mechanical engineer, and I'm always entranced by gadgets that improve efficiency, make work easier, or are just plain clever. Here are three gadgets that I like.

The Charcoal Companion C oastal Grilling Kabob Skewers ($20 for a set of four) are highly suitable for not only water-borne food goodies, but also veggies or strips of fowl or beef. The selling point of these skewers is the double prongs which stabilize the food on the grill and not allow it to flip over or roll around. Stainless steel for a long life, the skewers are a generous 14" in length and feature four individual icons -- fish, crab, lobster, and scallops. Dishwasher-safe, these kabob skewers will serve you well for many a grilling season.

Three Smartphones -- One of These May Be Just Right for You

There are new smartphones being released just about every day; all with great features and at a variety of prices. Here is a comparison of three of the latest, for your perusal.

The HTC One 4G Android Smartphone ($80-$550, depending on your selected service plan from Sprint) is a featherweight five ounces, but packs a 1.7 GHZ quad-core processor, and 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, all in a smooth aluminum case. It runs on the Android Jelly Bean 4.1 system, but is reportedly about to get an upgrade to 4.2.2; again, reportedly. 19 hour battery, twin cameras, Ultrapixel and Zoe Modes, Blinkfeed to consolidate your desired content -- continuously updated -- on your home screen, all of which you may control using your HTC One as a remote using the Sense TV app. Add in Beats stereo, Bluetooth 4.0, and you have a powerful, multipurpose smartphone.

Next up, the Samsung Galaxy S4 4G Smartp hone ($200-$650, depending on the accompanying service plan), a really rockin' phone. Available for pre-order now, it runs on the Jelly Bean 4.2.2 OS, with 2 GB of RAM and 16GB of storage (expandable). 1.9 GHZ quad core processor, 5" touchscreen, and a pair of cameras -- 13 mp rear and 2 mp front -- that may be used at the same time. Cool. In addition to all the usual connectivity stuff -- Bluetooth, WiFi and NFC -- the phone hosts a suite of features that require only a wave of your fingers to get the job done; for example -- Smart Pause to interrupt a video by looking away from the screen, or S Voice Drive to convert text to speech for listening to emails while you're on the road. Clever. This is my next phone.

The Nokia Lumia 920 4G Windows Smartphone ($20-$450, depending on your contract with AT&T) operates on Windows 8 with Live Tiles and Live Apps. It sports a goodly-sized display, at 4 1/2 inches, and has the usual pair of cameras -- 1.2 mp front and 8 mp rear -- that will easily handle your image-capturing needs. Tech stuff -- 1.56 GHZ four-core processor, and 32 Gb of memory; WiFi, Mobile Hotspot, GPS and Bluetooth 3.0. Weighing in at a paltry 6 1/2 ounces, this Nokia/AT&T combo will keep you in touch with family, friends, and business associates with no problems. A nice phone.

The NDuR Survival Straw -- if You Travel, You Need This

Just Say No to Skin Cancer: Sunscreen

Perhaps it's my pale exterior or maybe it's my "look out for others" instincts, but I am what you refer to as a "sunscreen pusher."

By this point in our relationship, my husband has probably heard me say, "Don't forget to put sunscreen on!" over a bajillion times and he knows a lesson in skin cancer and premature aging is on its way when I notice he's sporting a burn or tan.

I cannot stress it enough: skin care is extremely important. Not just because wrinkles and age spots and a tough/leather exterior are unbecoming, but because skin is our largest -- and most exposed -- organ.

Here's a little nugget of valuable information: Over the past two years, the website DealNews.com found that prices on jewelry, chocolate and flowers actually increased at the beginning of May.

Best Things to Buy in May

May is arguably one of the most lovely months of the year. It's the month you anticipate all your summer vacations and activities, it's the month you celebrate Mom and it's the month you finally get to kick all your winter clothes to the curb (or at least relegate them to the storage bin).

Weather-wise, May tends to not be too hot, but is still warm enough to enjoy time spent outdoors. Not to mention, all those gorgeous flowers in full bloom and trees that have finally sprouted green leaves... a true reprieve from winter's cold and bony hands.

Anyway, May is also a great month to go shopping for particular items, which is the topic I'm covering today. I've got all the 'best things to buy in May' covered below. Read through the list and then go forth and shop to your heart's content.

3D TVs

DealNews.com reports that last month, Ultra HDTV's (which boast a vertical resolution of 2160 pixels), hit stores with much lower price tags than were expected. For example, Chinese manufacturer Seiki offered their 50" 4K TV for $1500, a steal! Days layer, it dropped $300. My point is that this because this new wave of Ultra HDTVs are less expensive than anticipated, 3D TVs are even cheaper. In fact, prices have hit all-time lows of under $500 (LG 32" below is at $449, for example).

Expect hot prices between $600 and $1000 on these items. For an even sweeter deal, opt for name brand 60" 1080 LCD HDTVs, which are now around $50 cheaper than even their off-brand counterparts, reports DealNews. The site says to expect prices for these consistently below $700.

Camping Equipment

If you have any camping trips planned for the summer/fall, now is definitely the time to buy all of those camping essentials. I'm just going to get straight to the point: Pretty much any item that'd be appropriate to give as a graduation or wedding gift will go on sale during May. That includes cookware, china and kitchen appliances, which I'm highlighting here. Buying Tip: Hold on to your receipts. A lot of online and local stores have price match guarantees and adjustments that'll give you the difference if an item you buy goes on sale shortly thereafter. According to FatWallet.com, home goods and decor go on sale in the month of May. This probably has something to do with all of the spring cleaning that took place in March and April. Don't say we didn't warn you. There's so much cuteness overflowing from the new Diane von Furstenberg Gap Kids collection that you may be tempted to buy a few pieces now - you know, just in case. The designer's second installment for the retailer includes a little bit of everything for stylish wee ones.

Now this is one for a seriously stylish baby! These babyGap espadrilles ($35) will get little ones started off on the right foot. DVF did well here, showing off easy, comfy braided jute (on a rubber sole) with a signature-style pattern that's sure to earn baby some envious glances in the sandbox.

Known for her phenomenal wrap dresses, DVF designed one of the cutest styles we have EVER seen for little kids. The babyGap Wrap Dress ($45) is available in several colors and boasts a cute heart pattern. Kids will be comfortable all day thanks to the soft cotton/modal blend fabric.

Hanging Baskets for Your Summer Annual Flowers

Now that warmer weather is upon us, it's time to get going with Summer annual flowers. In addition to the traditional sites for planting flowers -- mailbox, foundation beds, and within carved out islands in your yard -- a great location is a front or back porch. Hanging baskets are, of course, the perfect solution for elevated plantings.

For example, this Hayrack 18" Hanging Basket ($25); it will hold a copious amount of annual flowers suitable for either sun or shade and the best part is that there is a water-retaining inner liner in between the layers of basket material; it's working to reduce the amount of water needed, for healthy growth, by about half. This basket is ideal for sites that are exposed to both sun and wind, two environmental forces that tend to dehydrate plantings.

Should you have a back deck that is in need of some Summer color, and the drink cap atop the handrail is at least 3" wide, this planter would be perfect. The Panacea Products Flat Iron Series 30" Deck Planter ($20; was $24) is a sturdily constructed, powder-coated steel frame which holds a cocoa liner. The planter is 8 x 8 x 30" in size and will easily contain a flat of annuals.

My favorite type of hanging basket is similar to this -- the Black Round Cocoa Lined 4-Arm Basket Tree ($117; was $152). It's 5 1/2 feet tall and built with strong round tubular steel topped with a powder-coated, weather-resistant paint. Included with the tree are four, 12" baskets with cocoa liners and hanging chains. This hanging basket tree would find a home on a front walkway or porch, or a back patio or deck. If your preference for the amount of flowers to be planted is like mine -- the more color, the better -- this hanging basket tree will probably fill that need. Nice.

As my summer schedule starts to fill with nothing but bridal showers and weddings, I'm left thinking of my soon-to-be-betrothed girlfriends: whatever shall I buy them?
