Video game insiders knew it would be big. But this big?

The sequel to 2007's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare--which itself sold over 13 million copies--Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is not just big, it's the biggest entertainment launch in history, pulling in $310 million in one day, and over half a billion in its first week. All this despite--or perhaps because of--controversy over a very graphic sequence early in the game.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 continues to blur the line between motion picture and video game with its breathtaking cinematics, immersive storyline and top-notch voice-acting. The 6th installment of the Call of Duty franchise carries on developer Infinity Ward's tradition of hardcore first-person shooter action in a hyper-realistic combat arena.

The story of Modern Warfare 2 picks up several years after its predecessor left off, with an ultranationalist terrorist organization now taking control of Russia. U.S. Army Ranger Joseph Allen is sent undercover by the CIA to get close to the organization's leader Vladimir Makarov. Allen is forced to participate in a massacre of civilians in a Russian ariport under Makarov's orders, who then reveals that he knew Allen was an American spy all along. Allen is publicly blamed for the massacre, creating an outcry that prompts Makarov to launch an invasion of the United States.

Modern Warfare 2 generated some criticism and controversy for the airport massacre scene of the story, in which the player's character participates in gunning down unarmed civilians. While it should be noted that this section of Modern Warfare 2 can be skipped, it does beg the question whether the sequence was meant for artistic purposes or shock value.

Controversy aside, Modern Warfare 2 is an amazing video game. While the Single Player Campaign Mode--the part of the game which follows the storyline--is fairly short, I doubt that I'm alone in saying so what? It's gorgeous, packed with impressively rendered terrains, destructible environments, and film-quality sound.

Modern Warfare 2 shines with a new game mode called Spec Ops. In this Arcade-style mode you take on a series of short but difficult objective-based missions alone or cooperatively with a LAN or online connection. Players won't miss the Campaign Mode when they take control of an AC-130 gunship while their partner dashes through enemy territory on foot. Multiple difficulty levels and dozens of missions make the Spec Ops Mode of Modern Warfare 2 truly remarkable for repeat gameplay.

Still, the real juice of Modern Warfare 2 is the online Multiplayer Mode. I can't tell you how many hours I played the original and never stopped enjoying the experience (except when I got fragged). Multiplayer on Modern Warfare 2 is even better, boasting visual effects and physics that surpass even the first Modern Warfare's Campaign Mode.

All of the innovative aspects of the original are back in Modern Warfare 2, including the bevy of customizable weapons, class system, perks, and killstreak bonus attacks. Modern Warfare 2 ups the ante, though, by adding tons of new weapons, new perks, and new killstreak attacks, including a Predator missile strike, an AC-130 gunship attacks, and even a game-ending nuclear attack with 25 kills in a row.

Best of all, Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer includes some improvements that came straight from the minds of gamers, including Host migrating (the game doesn't end when the host quits), "pro" versions of perks, and no more stupid "martyrdom" grenades.

All in all, Modern Warfare 2 is the king of all First Person Shooters, and deserves to reign for some time.

Snow Throwers -- Lots Better Than a Shovel

There's a big difference between a snow thrower and a snow blower, although the terms are commonly interchanged.

A snow thrower is a light-weight machine, either gas or electric-powered, and designed for lighter snowfalls and/or smaller areas to be cleared of the dreaded white stuff.

After the jump, a look at some snow throwers.

Some of the benefits of snow throwers are their lighter weight, smaller size -- allowing for reduced storage space -- simpler propulsion systems, and reduced operating noise, if you have an electric version.

Disadvantages -- won't clear as much, or as deep, or as heavy, a snowfall as their big brothers. A snow thrower is designed for areas like porches, patios, walkways, or small driveways. You don't want to tackle the mounded snow in your street with a snow thrower.

Let's get to it.

Gasoline-powered snow throwers -- Honda's single stage Clearing Path 20" thrower has a reliable 4 stroke (no need to mix gas and oil) electric start engine with a two year homeowner warranty. The snow discharge chute is manually adjustable through a range of 220 degrees.

Toro offers its Power Clear 210R; it will clear a 21" path. It's a single stage machine with a two stroke engine (gas/oil mix), a 180 degree adjustable discharge chute, and a two year homeowner warranty. Pictured at right.

Yard Machines (at the left) makes a nice 21" wide thrower with a 4 stroke engine. It has a very respectable 10" snow intake height, an electric start feature, and a two year limited warranty.

Electric snow throwers have a number of distinct benefits over their gasoline cousins. Fume-free and light in weight, they are very handy in clearing smaller areas close to your home. The downside is that you have to snake an extension cord behind you and remember not to run over it -- oops.

Yard Man has an 8.5 amp electrical machine with a 12.5" clearing width; it will throw snow pretty close to 25'. Two year limited warranty -- seems to be the standard. Pictured at the right.

MTD's electric Snow Fox will clear a 12" path, has a three-position chute control and will handle up to a 10" snow depth on each pass. No assembly required; plug it in and off you go. At the left.

A very high amperage motor -- 13 -- powers the Snow Joe Ultra Model 622U1. When you consider that your home's circuit breakers will likely handle 15 or 20 amps, you can push this guy through some fairly deep snow without bogging down. I like it.

Remember that whether gas or electric, these machines propel snow through rapidly rotating steel blades -- don't get your fingers anywhere near the blades at any time. Snow throwers are a principle cause of traumatic finger amputations each winter season. 'Nuff said.

Put your snow shovel away this season and let a snow thrower do the hard work. Your body will appreciate it. There are plenty of machines on hand at your dealer; just in time for Christmas.

Book Releases: November 24

Tuesday is traditionally the day when new literature titles hit bookshelves, so that's the day when we'll give you all the information you need to pick up your next great read! Be sure to come back next week for an all new list. Read on for some of this week's most anticipated new releases.

The finished manuscript for mega best-selling writer Michael Crichton's new novel was discovered after his untimely death earlier this year. Pirate Latitudes (Starting at $18.89: Up to 33% in Savings) is a swashbuckling high-seas adventure that represents not just Crichton's first exploration of the pirate genre, but a culmination of the author's penchant for writing thrilling, fun, fast-paced stories with a foundation of extensive research--not unlike Crichton's best-selling historical fiction novel The Great Train Robbery. This rousing pirate adventure is testament to how sorely Crichton's voice will be missed.

The best-selling author of Flags of our Fathers turns his attention to exploring the secret origins of America's erstwhile global empire. The Imperial Cruise: A True Story of Empire and War (Starting at $11.99: Up to 60% in Savings) is author James Bradley's examination of a sweeping 1905 diplomatic voyage to the Asian continent by a large American delegation. Sent by an expansionist-minded President Theodore Roosevelt to begin forging relationships for a lasting American presence there, and led by Secretary of War--and future president--William Taft, the delegation successfully visited and struck secret deals with Hawaii, Japan, Korea, the Philippines and China. Today Show weatherman Al Roker tries his hand at fiction with a murder mystery set in a familiar world--network morning shows. MSNBC anchor, Morning Joe co-host, and NBC Nightly News reporter Mika Brzezinski presents an autobiography that details how she balances being a mother and a working professional. All Things at Once (Starting at $6.99: Up to 72% in Savings) chronicles Brzezinski's life from an early age. The daughter of a National Security Advisor, Brzezinski was held to a high standard from the beginning. She met or surpassed even the highest expectations when she became the face of CBS News' on-the-ground coverage of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, seemingly assuring her place as a CBS news star. Suprisingly, Brezinski was let go from CBS not long after, during which time she devoted herself to raising her children. Brzezinski has since re-emerged as a respected and gifted journalist--notably drawing attention for her on-air refusal to run a story on Paris Hilton over a political story--while still fulfilling her duties as a mother and wife. DVD Releases: November 24

Tom Hanks returns as brilliant symbologist Robert Langdon in the second film based on a Dan Brown best-seller. Angels & Demons (Starting at $14.97: Up to 48% in Savings) finds an unlikely organization calling upon Langdon's expertise--the Catholic Church. Following the death of the Pope, Rome is abuzz with the imminent selection of his successor. Yet the papal selection process is abruptly interrupted when a mysterious organization--by all appearances the Church's long time enemy, the Illuminati--rigs a terrifyingly powerful antimatter bomb to go off under the Vatican. Worse yet, the perpetrators have captured the four papal candidates and promise to murder them one at a time in secret locations around Rome. Langdon and beautiful scientist Vittoria Vetra must race around Rome following a set of centuries-old cryptic clues to try to stop the murders, which will be gruesomely carried out by a cunning and merciless assassin. Ewan MacGregor co-stars, and Ron Howard again directs another heart-pounding thrill-ride filled with historical revelations, fascinating secrets and a shocking finale.

Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon headline this Christmas-themed romantic comedy about a couple forced to spend the holidays with their dysfunctional family. In Four Christmases (Starting at $16.99: Up to 41% in Savings), happily married couple Brad (Vaughn) and Kate (Witherspoon) McVie are preparing for their favorite annual Christmas tradition: blowing off their respective families to take off on a tropical vacation. But when heavy fog prevents them from departing San Francisco--and they are caught live on national news at the airport--the McVies have no choice but to make the dreaded rounds. With both their parents divorced and remarried, they have not one but four households to hit, setting them up for a series of madcap adventures with their weird and wacky relatives. Yet despite the dysfunction of the four families, an enchanted Kate finds herself longing to start her own family, forcing Brad to make a decision about his long-term commitment to Kate. The excellent supporting cast includes Robert Duvall, Mary Steenburgen, Sissy Spacek, Jon Voight, and Jon Favreau.

Adam Sandler stars as a terminally-ill stand-up comedian evaluating his life in this comedy-drama from director Judd Apatow. In Funny People (Starting at $19.99: Up to 33% in Savings), successful but self-absorbed comedic film star George Simmons (Sandler) learns that he has a rare form of leukemia and can expect to die within a year. In an effort to re-connect with his humble beginnings, Simmons rejoins the stand-up circuit. There he meets Ira Wright (Seth Rogen), an aspiring comic just at the start of his career. George takes on Ira as an assistant, trading mentoring for Ira's care and friendship as his health declines. Ira convinces George to begin reconnecting with family and friends, and to inform them of his illness. George is visited by his ex-fiancee Laura (Leslie Mann), who is now unhappily married. As they entertain beginning a relationship again, George discovers that his leukemia has gone into remission. When George begins to regress back to the self-centered egotist he was before he knew he was dying, Ira must confront his boss and friend to truly take a look at himself, even if it means jeopardizing his fledgling career.

Robert Rodriguez (Spy Kids) directs this wacky family adventure comedy. Shorts (Starting at $26.63: Up to 8% in Savings) is a series of interconnected vignettes all taking place in the town of Black Falls, a suburb situated around Black Box Inc. The giant corporation employs everyone in town and produces a do-it-all technological wonder called the Black Box. Life in Black Falls is turned upside-down when young Toby "Toe" Thompson discovers a mysterious rainbow-colored rock with the power to grant any wish that the holder desires. Naturally, with such great power comes dire consequences for selfish or unwise wishes. The children of Black Falls soon find themselves advised by super-intelligent babies, chased by alligators, befriended by tiny aliens, and threatened by giant booger monsters. Things get worse when Toe's parents (Leslie Mann and Jon Cryer) get a hold of the rainbow rock, bringing their own misguided desires to fruition. Yet nothing can prepare Black Falls for the danger in store when greedy Black Box CEO Carbon Black (James Spader) finds the rock in his possession. If they survive, the people of Black Falls might learn that what they really want isn't always what they're asking for.

Three Oscar winners and an Oscar nominee team up for this comedy heist film. The Maiden Heist (Starting at $11.99: Up to 29% in Savings) follows Charles, Roger and George (played by Morgan Freeman, Christopher Walken and William H. Macy), three earnest and forthright security guards at an art museum. Despite their humble positions, the guards have become personally attached to the beautiful artwork which they protect. As a result, when they learn that the new museum curator intends to ship away several of their favorite pieces of art, the three guards decide to take matters into their own hands. They draw up plans to perpetrate the perfect crime--swap out the priceless original works for fakes and hide the real masterpieces away from the curator. Their foolproof scheme goes exactly as planned, until a mistake forces the novice art thieves to quickly improvise, resulting in a hilarious comedy adventure. Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden co-stars.

The first three season of NBC's critically-acclaimed sitcom are now available in one boxed set. 30 Rock: Seasons 1-3 (Starting at $88.90: Up to 29% in Savings) is 58 episodes of the series created by and starring Saturday Night Live comedienne Tina Fey. Based on her experiences as head writer for SNL, the show chronicles the struggles of Liz Lemon (Fey), head writer for TGS with Tracy Jordan, a fictional SNL-esque sketch show headquartered at NBC's actual building at 30 Rockefeller Center in New York City. Liz is often saddled with handling the egos and outrageous demands of actors and NBC network executives, particularly those of the show's unpredictable star Tracy Jordan (SNL alum Tracy Morgan), and domineering, womanizing, meddling executive Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin). When the leggings first made their way back into fashion a few years ago, the trend was not universally loved. There's an important fashion rule that you need to always remember when you plan your liquid leggings outfits: leggings are not pants. Water Bottles -- Unique Stocking Stuffers

Water bottles -- not your grandfather's glass jug or your dad's thermos. The water bottles of today are sleek, ergonomically designed and, many times, sports specific -- think Camelbak hydration packs for ultra-marathon runners or specialized holders for bike riders in the Tour de France.

For the rest of us mere mortals who need a convenient way to carry liquids, there are a number of water bottle choices. Below the fold, some of those options.

Some things to consider when buying a water bottle. It should be easy to clean (preferably dishwasher-safe), have a spill-proof cap, legible volume markings, and be pretty well indestructible. My biggest issue is always -- small mouth or wide mouth opening?

In my view, a smaller bottle opening is less likely to spill water if you are drinking on the move -- on the backpacking trail or running, for example; but I like a wide mouth if I am packing the water bottle with ice for a really cold drink. Decisions, decisions.

Nalgene brought out its water bottle line when it discovered, in the 1970's, that its widely used plastic laboratory containers were being used for outdoor sporting activities. The bottles became popular for their light weight, strength, and convenience. They were made from polycarbonate, an ingredient of which was BPA -- a resin hardening substance.

There is (continuing) controversy over whether or not BPA leaching occurs in all polycarbonate containers -- not just water bottles -- so you need to be aware. Most manufacturers have discontinued the use of BPA in their water bottles, but if BPA is an issue with you, check with the maker. This Nalgene bottle, at left, contains no BPA.

Gaiam makes a variety of very nice water bottles, like this Spirals Stainless Steel, 25 ounce, dishwasher-safe model. Sturdy and lightweight, it is convenient to carry, using its ring top. Pictured right.

Gaiam also offers an aluminum water bottle. The Grass version has a 25 ounce capacity and must be washed by hand. Completely recyclable, including the top, it will serve you well.

LL Bean has a copolymer BPA-free bottle that holds .75 liters of liquid, is dishwasher-safe, fits most vehicle cup holders (good idea), and has a ring top that can be clipped to a backpack. The Camelbak is shown at the right.

I like this Element S tainless Steel water bottle -- it holds 25 ounces of a liquid, has a shape that makes it very easy to grip, and is capped with a flip top that you can operate with one hand.

Lastly, I couldn't forget the back-country folks. I've used a Katadyn filter for years; they now offer a water bottle for the trail that you fill, squeeze, and drink. The Katadyn MicroFilter weighs 7 ounces and with its integral carbon and EPA-standard filter, will provide bug and bacteria protection for up to 26 gallons of water, depending on the water quality, of course.

Any of these water bottles would make the commuter, school kid, runner, or backpacker happy. And they are just the right size to stick in a Christmas stocking this year.

There -- one more gift to scratch from the list. Excellent !

Camping Lanterns -- Not Just for Camping

Camping lanterns -- I recall the first camping lantern I ever saw; it used a really smelly fuel, had to be pumped up to start and maintain the flame, and I had to be very careful not to damage the mantle (the wick). Lots of work for, frankly, not a lot of illumination.

Well, things have radically changed in the arena of camping lanterns. And the best part is that camping lanterns are valuable for more than just camping.

After the jump, the varied uses of camping lanterns.

Modern camping lanterns are very sophisticated, durable, and reliable. With modern housing and operating materials and electronics, they will provide long-lasting, dependable illumination for the task at hand.

You can still buy a classic dual-mantle lantern, like this from Coleman, a leader in the field of lanterns. Shown at the left is the Coleman Dual Fuel 2 Mantle model that uses unleaded gas or proprietary Coleman fuel. Weighing in at under 4 pounds, the lantern will operate for about 7 hours on high flame, and 14 hours on low. Built with porcelanized, non-rusting vents, this model would be great for the backyard.

Another Coleman lantern is the Northstar InstaStart rig with a tube mantle; propane powered, and features electronic ignition to speed the lighting process. A good addition to your camping gear list. Shown right.

Moving on to electrical lanterns, Coleman has a very nice LED lantern powered by 8 D-cell batteries (not included). It sports a 4-position switch -- night light, low (66 hours run time), high (32 hours run time) and off (no light, of course). It has a bail handle for easy carrying. I like this guy. Weekend camping, for sure.

One more from Coleman, this one a rechargeable model, clearly suitable for outdoors, travel, or standby lighting at your home. Comes with ac and dc (car) chargers, a fluorescent U-tube lamp and operates on low or high mode. Shown right.

Brunton offers this mac daddy lamp, the Orion Three Mantle Lantern. 250 watts of illumination, sufficient to light up your whole campsite, it's propane powered, the brightness is adjustable (boy, I certainly hope so), and is configured such that you can put it on a table or hang it from a tree. Push button ignition and arrives with a durable carry case. This lamp is a great choice for a cabin or a fixed campsite.

If the ladies want something to stick in a purse, look at the Black Diamond Orbit lantern. It will collapse to a length of 4" and weighs just 4.4 ounces. Dual reflectors and a dimming switch are on board and the lantern may be recharged with an optional charger or operated on 4 AAA batteries -- a tiny light that can be kept close at hand.

A very clever multipurpose lantern is made by Eureka -- its Magic 185 Lamp runs on 4 AA batteries (included) and functions as an area light, a flashlight, and a strobe. Has a green LED locator light, a carry strap and a wire hanging loop. I think this lamp belongs in your vehicle's emergency kit.

Camping lanterns have come a long way with improvements in technology; they're more than just for camping. If you have a family member or friend who's an outdoor type, any of these would do well as a Christmas gift.

Sony Digital Cameras: 2009 point-and-shoot lineup

Sony has been a leader in digital cameras for many years and has a wide range of products available. If you're having trouble choosing a point-and-shoot camera, I'll review Sony's current lineup and give recommendations on the best deals whether you're looking for a small compact digital camera to keep in your pocket, or a full-featured camera with huge optical zoom.
Ultra-slim cameras
Sony's ultra-thin digital cameras are amazingly slender at only 16.5mm, or less than 3/4 of an inch. The newest flagship model released this year is the 10 megapixel Sony Cybershot DSC-TX1, which boasts Sony's new "Exmor R" CMOS sensor that significantly reduces image noise and improves low-light photographs. The new Sony CMOS technology makes a surprising improvement in image quality; If you're looking for a deal though, the older 12 megapixel Sony Cybershot DSC-T90 is still a great camera with all the same features, and a significantly cheaper pricetag. Both of these camera are great for casual photographers and easy to carry around with you. They're also user friendly, with a large 3" LCD touchscreen, and feature a 4x zoom optical lens for closeup shots.

Compact cameras
Sony's affordable compact cameras are a great deal if you don't need the slenderness of the ultra-slim models. In truth, most of these cameras are very tiny already! For example, the new 10 megapixel Sony Cybershot WX1 is only 20mm thick (still less than an inch!), but has the same "Exmor R" CMOS technology that greatly improves image noise especially in low-light photographs. In addition, the WX1 wide-angle lens has up to 5x optical zoom. If you're looking for the best deal on a simple and affordable Sony digital camera, I recommend the 12 megapixel Sony Cybershot DSC-W190, which starts at $130. The W190 is a great camera despite the weaker 3x optical zoom lens, and is focuses on beginner users with on-screen help and intuitive menus. Sony also recent released a new innovative products, the 10 megapixel Sony Cybershot G3, with an amazing 3.5" LCD screen and wireless 802.11g capabilities that allow you to transfer your photos wirelessly to your computer.

High-zoom cameras
If you're looking for more out of your camera, Sony has two new camera models designed for huge optical zoom, so you can get close-ups from afar. The 10 megapixel Sony Cybershot DSC-H20 fits a lens with 10x optical zoom into a surprisingly compact camera body, just under 2 inches thick. In contrast, the 9 megapixel Sony Cybershot DSC-HX1 is a full 4 inches thick, but features a 20x optical zoom lens. Both these cameras have large 3 inch LCD screens for viewing photos. Choosing between these two cameras is a tough call, but ultimately the H20 is a great camera for the cost, and the 20x optical zoom isn't like to get much use for average users.

Outdoor Cooking Stoves -- Tailgate Time

Outdoor cooking doesn't cease just because it starts to get chilly in the northern latitudes; it's still warm in the southern parts of the country. And, in both cool and warm parts, tailgating is just coming into its prime.

You can't hold a decent tailgate party without some freshly grilled goodies. Enter the outdoor cooking stove.

Below the fold, a look at some of those stoves.

Things to consider when buying an outdoor cooking stove, like this Coleman two burner PerfectFlow model, at the right:

Ensure that any stove you use is stable when it's in operation -- you don't want the stove moving around, particularly when you have liquids on the burners. Most stoves are built as "laptop" models, but almost all of them sport either foldaway or removable legs. Your choice, and it really depends on if you are working off a truck tailgate or setting the stove on a flat surface.

I like this stove for its light weight -- 4 pounds -- and sturdy construction. The Brinkman 842 Stainless Steel stove has electronic ignition, a pair of burners to give you 20,000 BTU of heat, and a windscreen. Shown at the left.

A good quality stove will be light in weight, yet be sturdy in construction. If you have to make a choice, go for sturdy. This stove was chosen as a Consumers Digest Best Buy; the Camp Chef 60D has twin burners, folding legs and shelves, a sturdy windscreen, and cast iron grates for long life. Shown at the right.

Get a stove that offers electronic ignition; very, very convenient. That said, always carry matches with you, in case the fancy lighting system bails on you. Just saying.

Multiple burners and adjustable flames are the best way to efficiently prepare multiple foods in the outdoors. If it's really cold, you don't want the burgers to cool off while you're warming up the beans or home-made soup. Camp Chef also offers this Weekender 2; with two burners, each going at 30,000 BTU, and folding legs, it's a great table-top stove or one you can plant in the stadium parking lot.

Windbreaks are essential to ensure that the food being cooked is promptly and efficiently prepared, and your flame doesn't get extinguished. If your stove doesn't have a windbreak -- honestly, how long have you had that stove -- don't use cardboard or paper for a windbreak, for obvious reasons; at the minimum, grab some aluminum foil.

Speaking of windbreaks -- the screens on this King Kooker outdoor stove (at the right) are generously sized, along with the 54,000 BTU (!) burners, removeable legs and a long-lasting brass needle valve in the propane regulator.

Lastly, don't cook inside a tent or a vehicle. Both you and the stove need oxygen to keep going and you don't want want to be the one who runs out of it first.

Tailgating is in high season -- don't be the only folks in the stadium parking lot eating cold sandwiches before kickoff.

Christmas Decorations: Santa Sacks

Christmas decorations come in many shapes and forms, but one of my favorites is the ultra festive Santa sack. I was introduced to these a few years ago and have bought personalized Santa sacks for my kids. You buy them once and you will have them forever. Similar to Christmas stockings, Santa sacks are great because they help to keep everyone's goodies organized and it makes it look as if Santa personally delivered the sack through the chimney. My Santa sacks are personalized with my children's names and they love seeing them filled to the brim on Christmas morning.
