Samsung DynaFlat TX-R1635 16" TV

  • By edgecat0r   03/08/2007 Excellent
  • Pros:
Picture quality, audio, interface and remote are all absolutely phenomenal.
  • Cons:
No HD display capabilities or widescreen "scrunch" mode. But given everything else, that's really not too important.
  • Summary:
After my little 13" Sanyo CRT began to show signs of giving out, I began to look for a new TV for my dorm. Naturally, I thought that having a little LCD TV would be cool because it'd be smaller and capable of displaying in higher resolutions. Well, despite that I quickly learned that LCD TVs are NOT all they're cracked up. Some of them have very inadequate speakers and take forever to cycle between channels, many have issues with ghosting and viewing angles, and all of them are unable to display the black levels of a quality CRT. HD be darned, I just can't justify paying hundreds of dollars for a product with that many flaws.I happened to be browsing through a local big box store's TV section when I noticed the TX-R1635 floor model's striking picture. It was the clearest and most vivid of any set on the wall, including the LCDs, and I liked it so much that I picked it up right then and there. When I set it up in my room, I was thrilled by how impressive my standard cable looked - and the cable hookups in my house are split at least 3 or 4 times before reaching the hookup in my room! The audio was surprisingly rich and full given the size of the built-in speakers. And best of all, both the picture and audio were easy to configure with the "menu" option. It took me only a few minutes to navigate through the menus and fine-tune the settings to my liking. The TX-R1635 also boasts a few unique features that I haven't found on other TV sets. First, it has an option for the TV to play a little song when you turn it on and off, which is a cute - albeit useless - touch. It also features a "surf" button which will automatically flip back to a channel after a certain period of time you can select from a bunch of presets. The manual suggests using the surf option, say, when you're watching something during your favorite program's commercial break and you want it to automatically flip back to that channel after. And of course, it also sports a very unusual 16" size which turned out for me to be the perfect compromise between a diminutive 13" set I can barely see and a hulking 20" behemoth that's too big.I'd give this an overall 9/10. The only knocks I can really call it on are the lack of HD display capabilities and 16:9 "scrunch" mode, but I don't consider either of those to be important - and you shouldn't either. Buy this instead of a little LCD TV and get yourself some nice gear for it with the cash you save!

  • Pros:
Color, contrast, brightness, size, looks. Grey scale, shadow detail, detail in general, sharpness.
  • Cons:
Contrast and Brightness were set way to high out of the box. An S-Video input would be nice, a 16:9 squeeze mode would be nice.
  • Summary:
Wow, what a great little TV for the money. I cannot imagine why somebody would drop $300+ on a small LCD TV when you can have this one for half that. No LCD can produce the black levels of a good CRT , granted when you go larger ...over 30" LCDs start to show their advantages but for a TV under 20" CRT is the way to go. Out of the box the contrast and brightness were set way too high..nothing uncommon with TVs though. A quick run with a THX video optimizer DVD and a bit of tweaking and this TV looks great. For the money I could not be happier. The only other TV I would consider are the Sonys..too bad Sony is finished making tube TVs and its also too bad Sony never though of the 16" tube size. Samsung hit the nail on the head with this size...its a perfect size if 13" is too small and 20" is too big. A++++ Id give it a 8/10 rating. Its definitely the best 16" tube TV since its the only one. :)As far as I am concerned the only good CRT tvs under 20" is this one and the Sony 14" which is too small and $50 more money and frankly I dont think it has the punch of this one.
