User Reviews for
Brother HL-2170W Laser Printer
- By tedshanian 10/19/2009
- Pros:
Very easy to setup...took me longer to unpack it then to set it up for wireless printing. Must use the network cable for the setup though. - Cons:
None so far...still working off the toner that came with the printer. -
Summary:
We already had a HP Color Wireless printer and was going through ink like nobodies business. So decided to take a look at a BW printer. Got this for $90 dollars at newegg.com. Like I said above the installation was easy...not sure why others had problems. I did use the network cable as part of the process which was recommended in the guide. I have installed on Windows XP SP3 and Vista with no problems. The quality and speed have been great. Have not had issues with noise since it is not in our main living area since it is wireless it can go anywhere. I highly suggest this. This is my third Brother printer first Laser Jet and have no complaints.

- Pros:
Easy to set up-fast print speed! - Cons:
None so far... -
Summary:
Because my Windows98 vintage HP inkjet finally crapped out I picked up the HL-2170W from Best Buy for $109 yesterday. Connected VIA ethernet cable to my Airport Extreme wireless router, the wireless Macbook was very easy to run print setup on (5mins). Running the Auto seek setup on my Dell desktop XP Home machine was a bit more troublesome and this comp is connected directly to the mac router. I had to manually print out the IP address of the printer and type it in during network print setup. Both Comps are now printing very nicely to the brother.

- Pros:
Easy setup on wireless, reasonable toner costs - Cons:
Dims lights ith startup power draw -
Summary:
This is a great home printer. Its not the smallest; but with the wireless network feature you can put it anywhere nearby (you don't need to have it within a cable length of your desk). Time for the first page out is pretty good; and I have no complaints about the print quality. I like that the paper cassette is a closed draw -- I've had drums scratched from dirt accumulation on the paper with a different model printer. Price is highly variable -- I got mine for about $70 with coupons. If it were color and could do duplex, it would be perfect.

- Pros:
Wireless printing option - Cons:
You have to manually set it as a static IP to prevent the router from changing it. Wish it had a sleep option. Also wish it was in color. -
Summary:
I can't say enough good things about this printer. I wish it had a sleep option though. Otherwise it is always on. Also, it was difficult to get it configured properly because the router kept changing the IP but from then on, it's smooth sailing. I wish it was in color!

- Pros:
* Compact size* High speed printing* Wired and Wi-Fi connectivity - Cons:
None -
Summary:
Excellent printer that can satisfy printing needs of an individual user or a small group. The Wi-Fi connection option adds extra flexibility for roaming/mobile users. The printer is very easy to set up. Although the printer itself lacks a sophisticated status panel, comprehensive real-time printer diagnostics and status information is available via web-based interface--a standard feature of this and many other network-enabled Brother printers.
