User Reviews for
Atlus Odin Sphere

  • By jngx80   12/30/2007 Good
  • Pros:
    2D graphics/designs look great.
  • Cons:
Somewhat repetitive combat, horrible inventory/item system design
  • Summary:
Odin Sphere is probably the best looking (at the very least visually intriguing) 2D game ever. All the artwork and graphics are extremely detailed and very imaginative. If people remember Legend of Mana for the Playstation, Odin Sphere is kind of similar to it, except the tone and design is generally darker.Beyond the beautiful 2D graphics, the game itself isn't all that special. There are some design flaws that slows down the pacing of the game despite it being a sidescrolling hack 'n slash/action game which ideally should be quick. When you want to use "magic" you have to pull up a menu which pauses the game and select it. Same goes for using items. Not sure if it was just me but there always seemed to be a split second delay pulling these menus. But the biggest flaw in this game is that it touts an item creation system yet each character can only hold a very limited amount in their inventory. I found myself constantly going into the items menu and having to decide which items I wanted to keep/which to throw away. Item creation is pretty important in this game so if you're not a gamer who likes it, Odin Sphere may not be a game for you.
  • By lobitoh   12/02/2007 Excellent
  • Pros:
Best beat'em up with awesome 2D graphics
  • Cons:
    Loading times
  • Summary:
This is one the best beat-em up games releases by Atlus. The game itself has beautiful graphics and the story telling is great. You choose 5 characters and each one has different traits and story. You can customize the character and raise their stats by just mixing items. The only downfall of this game is the loading times. The stage maps are kind of similar but the design are different. This game is a must have for those PS2 gamers. This is one of the games that marked the last generation of video games.
  • By keelie   11/14/2007 Excellent
  • Pros:
    Awesome graphics (2D art)
  • Cons:
    Slowdown at times
  • Summary:
Odin sphere is a great action RPG published by Atlus. It features gorgeous art-like 2D graphics and battles. The presentation is nearly perfect and is an instant classic. One drawback is the occasional slowdown during boss battles. Otherwise, I can't find any flaws in the game, be it the graphics, story or the gameplay. At only $40, this is a fresh game that deserves a buy!
  • By botticus   11/07/2007 Very Good
  • Pros:
    Gorgeous 2D art
  • Cons:
    Repetitive gameplay
  • Summary:
Odin Sphere is one of the most beautiful 2D games released in some time, maybe ever. The hand-drawn art is spectacular, and the cut animation has a very unique style. While the gameplay can get repetitive both in environment and in action, there is enough in this RPG-Lite to keep fans of that genre and the action genre as a whole entertained for the most part.
  • By mojave   11/01/2007 Very Good
  • Pros:
Stunning 2D action RPG with good story
  • Cons:
Severe slowdown during some boss fights
  • Summary:
Odin Sphere is an action RPG featuring a 2D battle mechanic and gorgeous hand-drawn backgrounds. The game is very deep and will provide you with 50+ hours of gameplay. Each stage of the game is a circular side-scrolling area (thus the "sphere" in the title) that doubles back on itself, making for a unique gameplay experience. Each sphere has a different inherent difficulty and you can choose amongst them at certain points, thus allowing you to make your own path through the game. This is one of those late-system RPGs (the original Playstation had many) that will no doubt become a classic in time. Get this while you can for a decent price.
