El Salvador y San Jose was a Spanish merchantman sailing from Lima, Peru to Guayaquil, Ecuador in August 1680 when she struck the rocky sand bank called EL Burro adjacent to the island of Santa Clara 20 miles off the coast of Ecuador. She sank very quickly, scattering her cargo across the reefs, including a shipment of 100,000 pesos in silver cobs from the Potosi mint.
