The issue of age-appropriate dressing has long piqued the interest of many men and women of all ages. Some agree, while others take offense. Should a 15 year old and a 35 year old shop in the same department? There has to be a line drawn somewhere, should the juniors department should be off limits to individuals of a certain age? Perhaps the issue of figure-appropriate dressing should also be included in this discussion. Should you flaunt it if you've got it? Or flatter your figure in tasteful, stylish looks? We can all admire and don the same trends, but each in a different way. The skinny jean is still a hot trend and can be worn by women of all ages. But not all women should wear the SAME pair of skinny jeans.
These are perfect for your tween:
While the higher rise on these will flatter Mom. For those looking for a modest fit and a hint of control, this pair is perfect for you too:
This pair is perfect for the 20 and 30-somethings:
We can all follow the trends, look fabulous and age-appropriate!
However, there are certain fashions that continually top the "don't" list because they aren't flattering on any body of any age. Keep this in mind when you are championing the capri pant. Do exposed ankles keep you that much cooler in hot weather? Your legs appear short and stumpy, even if heels are worn. Why not opt for a flowing skirt? Remember ladies, just because it's comfortable and easy, doesn't mean it's flattering and stylish. Otherwise the muu muu would be a best-seller!
Agree? Or disagree, defend the capri pant. Share your comments with us. See fashion tips for men here.

421. NOT EVERYONE WANTS TO LOOK FLIRTY!! You people CAN'T dictate what I will wear.

422. I don't understand why this so called "fashion guru" thinks capri pants are inappropriate for women over 40. I think capri pants flatter a woman over 40. What should we start wearing mumus!?

423. Tim Gunn can just shut it. As for your advice to buy something else, you're being gulled by a fashion industry that wants change for the sake of profit. Women LOVE their capris. Get over it. Move on to something else.

424. Fashion Guru?
Because you give advice on a TV show does not make you a fashion Guru. Women have brains enough not to listen to bad advice from anyone, and not wearing capris over 40 is bad advice.

425. I have 2 kids and I WILL NOT wear a dress or skirt to run errands in. I can see me now in a dress running after my 2 year old in a department store or pushing a buggy in the grocery store. GET A LIFE! If this is all you have to comment on Mr. Gunn then you need a new job. Why do women have to always look like they just stepped out of a salon and off the fashion train. Men don't have to. And women work just as hard!!! It is soooo obvious that a man wrote this and I will be very surprised if he has kids. Capris are a fashion miracle!!!!!!

426. I've read a few articles from this guy dissing the capris and I don't understand HIS problem with something he will never wear. I love the way the capris look on myself and I like the way they look on others--PARTICULARLY the over 40 crowd. Being short, I don't have to worry about the length of the pants, etc. They are cool and they are cool! I'm in the over 50 crowd myself.

427. Where does this guy get his ideas? Is he crazy or what? No Capris? No low-rise jeans? I am 40 and WILL WEAR LOW-RISE and MY CAPRIS!!!

428. This is just a ploy to attempt a refresh on everyone's wardrobe. We all have a great selection in our closets therefore not requiring us to buy major amounts of clothing every spring. My spring shopping consists of a few stylish tops TO GO WITH MY CAPRIS. Tim Gunn is great for high fashion but is really out of touch with America's women. Dresses aren't practical and to quote Oprah "you really have to know who you are before you wear shorts".

429. I will continue to wear capris. I looked at the pictures and quite frankly I thought the capris looked much better than the alternatives - this is a fashion ploy to make you buy more clothes. For what it is worth, capris are one of the only types of pants that look good on all ages.

430. Capris are here to stay even if the fashion people decide to quit designing them. It's very easy to have the bottom of any pair of pants cut and hemmed to your most flattering capri pant length. I disagree about skirts being cooler in the warm weather unless one's inner thighs don't meet in the center. I would have to wear pettipants which would make me even hotter.

431. I LOVE my capri's. I am 45, and I feel more comfortable in them than anything else. I feel that look good on any age. Don't discontinue the capri's!!

432. I may be late to this debate, but for anyone who might read this:
Good luck to any fashion-nazis who think they can regulate women over 40! We make the choices we make because it suits OUR purposes. Cold day in heck before any of us dumps a practical, well cut good fitting piece of clothing because some yahoo we've never met says so.
We've earned the right to wear capris, which are comfortable, cool in the heat, modest and when worn in correct proportions and fit -- fashionable. And thanks to those fashion houses who are ignoring the gurus and are tailoring business suits with capris, because that's what I wear to work. Daily. And I just got a FAT promotion. In a professional environment. Take THAT fashion gurus!

433. My daughter (slim teen), my mother (heavy senior), and myself (average over forty) all love capris. The difference is that we shop at stores appropriate for our age and body size. My mother would never wear a flowing skirt as "expert" suggests because she is not comfortable in bare legs so she would choose to wear hosiery which is too hot in the summer. Basically it all comes down to fit, wearing the size you are and not the size you want to be. No style is off limits based on your age or weight.

434. It's just like the string bikini underwear, thongs, etc. Men love them but ask them to wear them for 24 hours. They would tear them off immediately.
Have him try wear slacks or a dress while shopping or anything active. Capris definitely keep me cooler and I prefer not to let my baggage hang out in shorts. It is hot and muggy in Kansas City, Missouri, also, just like in Mississippi. I wear shorts at home but could not function at any outdoor event in slack. I would be a walking fountain, dripping with sweat.
I just try to look decent, not slutty, and be comfortable. What does a man know?

435. Looks like we hav a consensus among all women over 40 who agree that Capris are OK to wear.
I'm a Florida woman --- today it will be 86 degrees! Yes, I do own some flowy soft-fabric skirts that are recommended to wear but I choose not to live in skirts and they won't work very well for jumping on and off a sailboat. -- happy to have my Capris. I'm keping them and not obsessing about the bit of cellulite I have. Capris are less expensive than Liposuction.

436. Women look good dressed or undressed

437. I'm not interested in what a man says we should be wearing. Capris highlight the cute shoes we all love to wear in the summer and look slightly more dressed up that shorts, which I'm not comfortable wearing to shop. It's the equivilent of the 3/4 length sleeve in a sweater- so keep wearing them sisters!

439. I think the issue at hand w/ this article is that Women don't know how to wear Capri pant's properly. Women don't want to show their legs, but they love so show their fat/flabby stomaches.. It's disgusting.

440. I've talked with a number of women over 40 about this and not one of them can come up with a logical reason women of 40 shouldn't wear capris. That man, whoever he is, has no business telling us what we should and should not wear.
