The issue of age-appropriate dressing has long piqued the interest of many men and women of all ages. Some agree, while others take offense. Should a 15 year old and a 35 year old shop in the same department? There has to be a line drawn somewhere, should the juniors department should be off limits to individuals of a certain age? Perhaps the issue of figure-appropriate dressing should also be included in this discussion. Should you flaunt it if you've got it? Or flatter your figure in tasteful, stylish looks? We can all admire and don the same trends, but each in a different way. The skinny jean is still a hot trend and can be worn by women of all ages. But not all women should wear the SAME pair of skinny jeans.
These are perfect for your tween:
While the higher rise on these will flatter Mom. For those looking for a modest fit and a hint of control, this pair is perfect for you too:
This pair is perfect for the 20 and 30-somethings:
We can all follow the trends, look fabulous and age-appropriate!
However, there are certain fashions that continually top the "don't" list because they aren't flattering on any body of any age. Keep this in mind when you are championing the capri pant. Do exposed ankles keep you that much cooler in hot weather? Your legs appear short and stumpy, even if heels are worn. Why not opt for a flowing skirt? Remember ladies, just because it's comfortable and easy, doesn't mean it's flattering and stylish. Otherwise the muu muu would be a best-seller!

61. I would agree, NOT to wear a bikini,or a MIni skirt, or bare navel.I have seen older women wear thongs at the beach and LOL thats NOT a pretty site no matter how thin they are, the hanging flesh YAk. BUt capri pants thats crazy. I have seen woman in their 80's look great in a cute capri set.

62. I'm 58, and at 5 feet 8 and 120 pounds, I wear what looks appropriate for my figure, and that definitely includes capri's. I also can and do wear stripes occasionally, so I guess that add's another fashion "no no" to my tally, according to the fashion guru. He is way off the mark for what is appropriate and what is not.

63. No way in hell I'm giving up my capri pants! I have long legs and wear high heels and I look fabulous! As for the jackets: what's the option? those that have a peplum waist and make your ass look huge? I stopped letting people dress me when I was 15. Don't plan to start now!

66. What? "Anyone over 40 shouldn't wear capri pants" That can't be for real. Why not? Are women supposed to be in long pants all summer long? I don't think so. You're going to get a lot of letters about this.

67. Tim, regarding no capri pants over 40......you are way off base. I can't believe that AOL would actually publish your list when you obviously don't have a clue as to what you're talking about. I get angry when I think of the women who will actually belive his opinion makes sense.

68. I totally agree with all of the above comments. I am 46 years old, and I wear almost nothing but capris in the summer. I wear them because I am not comfortable in shorts though my husband says he likes me in them. They are appropriate for almost any occaision, and stylish. I gave up 2 piece bathing suits, but I am not giving up my capris! And did you see those ugly high waisted jeans! Those are hideous MOM Pants like on Saturday Night Live spoofs. I wear low rise jeans because they are flattering to my body style. Mid rise are okay, too, it depends on how you are built. I would never let my stomach show anyway. That guy is an idiot. I thought 40 was the new 30, and so on!!

69. Bobbi Brown is a woman not a man, just thought I'd make that clear, since so many think they are taking advise from a man (or not). But I will not trade in my Capri's nor my low-rise jeans, 50 or not, I'm in the best shape of my life and my husband (who matters most) loves them on me.

70. I never cared what other girls wore when I was in high school. I wore what I felt comfortable in and what looked good on me. I do the same thing now that I'm 50 and a doctor's wife. I bite my thumb at anyone, especially a male self proclaimed fashion guru, that tries to tell me what to wear. I've seen some of those so called fashionable styles. I wouldn't give 50 cents let alone hundreds of dollars to wear what they call 'fasionable' these days. If I want to wear horizontal stripes (yuck) or capris, I will. As far as the low rise jeans, I don't like wearing them. I like my waistband at my waist, not at my hips.
I think at 50, I have the right to decide for myself what is age appropriate and if anyone tries to tell me otherwise they will be getting an earful.

71. I'll wear what I want. I look better in capris and low rise pants than most people in their 20's. How stupid of someone to try and tell us what to wear. What a bunch of crap.

74. I'm curious, since this came out when he was on Oprah's show, what did Oprah say about all this; she's over 40. This idea that a woman "can't" do something due to her age is ridiculous and insulting. Who's he to tell and who says we need to be told. Perhaps someone should advise the men what not to wear? By the time you get to 40 you know what you like and what looks good on you; if you have a question, you ask; you don't need to be told. As far as capris go; my 22 month old granddaughter wears them as does my 77 year old aunt (me too and I'm "over 40") and I think we all look great!

75. Capri's? Heck, I'm a 6'2", 200 lbs straight male who used to be a 'punk-rocker' back in college. I kind of do my own thing in my current life and job (ie - no particular fashion requirements, but I do well, Thank You!). In the summer, I love wearing black 'sport capri's,' yes - bought out of the womans department. I have long athletic legs, but to me, they look skinny. So, I wear capri's in the summer with my football jerseys, and it still produces a very masculin athletic look. (Heck, the capris are the same exact length of the pants that I used to wear back when I played H.S.football.) I think some places market capris as 'skateboarder pants.' My fiance thinks they look cool! I like them because they cover up enough of my skinny legs, yet they are much cooler than full length jeans in the summer. And finally, about once a week AOL runs these so-called 'fashion articles,' - what a JOKE! The people who write this tripe need to find another line of work, because, for the past few months, no matter what topic their 'dashion expert' is talking about, they are full of it! Thats what I like about these BLOGS, the people out there have called AOL on this crap too, yet they still keep putting it out. Thanks, ozzy.
(just an old punk rocker who also digs wearing earrings and using nail polish as well. I'm happy with my style, and couldn't CARE LESS what the heck the rest of the world thinks!)

76. I love Tim Gunn, but I think he's missed the mark on several points here. I really don't get it, he's normally the first to say that body type should be a big determing factor in clothing selection. Now, I'm 43, short, and overweight. A long-line suit jacket (To mid-thigh) is very slimming on me. Does it make me look short? I AM short. Nothing short of standing on a box will change that. Also, pleated-front pants give me some extra room where needed, and are also flattering with a suit. Capri's aren't for me. I'll wear shorts that come to just above my knees, and damn what anyone thinks, but I do think Capri's are cute on a tall, slender woman. 100% with Tim on the horizontal stripes, tho...They're nobody's friend!

77. You have got to be kidding? Would you rather see us over "40" in short shorts? Give me a break. Capri's are great. We are great. We know what does and doesn't look good on us.

79. I am 51-I wear junior sizes and low hip hugging jeans because I look smokin' in them-I wear what I like and what looks good on me

80. I am in my forties and I wear a size two. I absolutely refuse to give up my low-rise jeans in favor of..mom jeans. I love my capri's and I am tall enough to wear them well. I refuse to by into what woman of a certain age "should wear". On occasion, I wear short, but tasteful skirts. Nothing will age some woman more than "dressing their age". If you can get away with it, run with your own personal style~ no matter how old you are! Judi 45
