O
ffice attire can be tricky business. Nowadays most work environments are pretty casual, which can be good and bad. With the freedom of being able to dress casual, comes the responsibility of being able to maintain a professional work environment.
I am a true believer that everything is not for everybody and that certain things are best left at home. Do your coworkers really need to see all of your non work related "business" in a mini skirt, plunging neckline, or pants that are too tight? Not only does it look unprofessional it borders on inappropriate. Wearing a t-shirt that says "Baby Mama" or "I Love Beer" is not only immature it is tacky and shouldnt be worn at all in public, much less your job.
Have you seen one of your office mates wear something that you felt would be better suited for the athletic or night club? Or are you guilty of one of our office malfunctions? Let us know what you think.

41. I have to agree with all of the No No's listed in the article. I've always followed the old adage, dress for the position you want, not necessarily where you are. I always try to dress professionally, even when I worked for myself and had an office in my home. I still met with clients there but always looked like I was going to a "regular office." I worked once with a woman who came into the office reeking of perfume and then would add more 2 - 3 xs a day. UGH! It wasn't even a decent brand!!! Everyone gave her "looks" but would never say anything. I finally couldn't take it anymore because her desk was right near mind....I always had to take my afternoon break when she started spraying. I suggested she might want to "go easy" on the perfume because it was very strong. She was offended but at least turned it down a notch!

43. I cleaned offices for years and it's those people who bring the whole family album..(pictures of family in frames) that bugged me the most. not to mention all the crap they put on the desks. Personnaly I can see right through you..you do this to show your decorating skills when actually most of you don't know the first thing about decorating...lol!!! Leave your stupid little toys and all that mess at home. Makes it tough on housekeepers.

44. Two things I would like to address: Casual Fridays, and Fashion Trends encouraged by the retail world.
First: Casual Friday
I work in a typical office environment that also has a manufacturing floor one floor below--which basically means folks in lab coats over jeans, uniforms or just a neat pair of jeans with a teeshirt/sweatshirt work attire. We instituted Casual Friday (along with the rest of the World) and had "highly educated professionals" show up on Fridays with torn up, paint speckled jeans, ill-fitting tee shirts and sneakers that look like they've done more gardening or bug extermination than anything else. The folks that "got" what Casual Friday was all about wore everything from "cheap" jeans to the very expensive ones, but all were clean, sometimes creased with an appropriate no advertisement Tee Shirt or sweatshirt that proclaimed their sports team preference, or last vacation, or their favorite beer. Often, they wore it with a comfortable blazer or loose jacket. Now? We have no "casual Friday" because of the abuse and we are not allowed Blue Jeans ever. Thank you, those who need to "express themselves" and wear what you wouldn't even wear to a family picnic because you still want to make an impression on Uncle Joe or Aunt Sally.
My second point: FASHION
Hello NORDSTROM? or whomever I am speaking to:
WE need real time clothes that work for a female.
That means TROUSERS and SHIRTS, and a go with all BLAXER, not high water pants, low waisted pants, and the worst offender: the LOW CUT SHIRT. WE NEED office attire, high waisted pants, great pencil skirts, lovely blouses that indicate we are female without having to show CLEAVAGE. With all of the blogs, not ONE mentioned that women are just running amok with the amount of CLEAVAGE they can expose at work which brings me back to FASHION an the ELIZABETHiAN age, are we all about cleavage?

46. We have a person in our office that marinates in cheap perfume. It is repulsive! We call her Smella because her name is very close to that (one letter off). One of these days, I'm going to slip and call her Smella to her face. BTW, she's older, and we've been told by management that older people lose their sense of smell, so that may be why she wears so much. That's still no excuse! It's the management's way of side-stepping this issue. Peeeeeuuuuuu!!!

47. I agree that you need to dress for the ocassion, and job but as a floral designer I find that on the job at a location I have to wear shoes that alow me to climb on ladders for trellised designs and also look good.
I HATE Crocs! LOL I do wear flip flops here in sunny Cal, but classy leather or fabric trimmed styles if on a job, not Havianas.
For meetings with clients, I dress in nice slacks and tops with artistic & tasteful accessories.
A good frist impression with a client is so important!

48. I don't see what the problem is with wearing Crocs, they're comfortable. I alternate between wearing my Crocs and birkenstocks during the summer. If its a rainy day out come the Crocs, I don't care if they get wet and they dry out fast so you're not wearing wet shoes all day. Our office is pretty relaxed so I wear clean un-ripped jeans, t-shirts and sandals or crocs. And yes its an office environment, but I feel that people can be more productive if they are comfortable and don't care if their skirt is the right length or if they're showing enough skin. You're there to work not pick up a date.

49. Additional malfunctions (men or women):
Not wearing proper undergarments; going braless or without underwear.
Intentionally showing your underwear; bra straps, thongs, boxers; dark bras and underwear showing through light/thin clothing.
Showing bare midriffs, bare backs, butt cracks, too much cleavage or bare chest.
“Wearing” pants that sit on or just above the wearer’s genitals or below the curve of their butts - with or without boxers, briefs or thongs - this look has no place outside of a playboy/playgirl centerfold.
Poor hygiene; not bathing, using deodorant, brushing your teeth, washing your hair.
Wearing sleeveless shirts with underarm hair or short skirts with unshaved legs.
Fingernails too long to button buttons and eyebrow, nose, tongue, lip, chin, belly and obvious nipple or genital piercing.
Exposed violent, vulgar, eyesore, or an obnoxious amount of tattoos.
Rule of thumb: If it is something that you don’t want to see on someone over 50 or over 200 lbs then it has no place in an office.

50. There was a secretary in the hospital that I work that ALWAYS wore something inappropriate, either her skirt was was WAY too short or she had spaghetti strap tops/dresses, which she had too much up top to be wearing. Her daughter came to work there and it was the same thing, both of them looked like they had taken make-up lessons from Tammy Faye! They didn't tone down their attire until the mother got caught in a compromising situation with her married boss!

51. I wouldn't wear Crocs to work, but after checking the website, it looks like there are some styles that ARE work-appropriate after all. If this link doesn't work, just go to http://www.crocs.com and look at the styles.

52. I can't for life of me afford nordstroms. Target, Kmart, Walmart, even stores like the goodwill all have nice clothes at a reasonable price. My job requires me to wear black pants or black jeans, and a company shirt that is provided. Maybe more employers should consider providing a shirt with company logo, and either black pants or black jeans... AND for goodness sakes they should have to fit and not fall off the ass.

54. i think to wear a lot of make up at the office is not appropiate either, specially when you're a married woman wearing bloodred lipstick and your cheating to your husband with your coworker. that's what happened at my job a few years back, she came out of the supply room her lipstick was all over but on her lips, on his face on his white collar shirt and makes me wonder where else......ha ha ha good thing the boss was out of town on vacation, and almost everybody was gone, just me and another secretary, we were nice and kept the secret.

55. While I agree that everyone should dress appropriately, fact is many don't. Gone are the days of the clear line between business attire and weekend clothes. We have done it to ourselves when we came up with "business casual". Now while I think I know what that is, once you come up with a "new" standard the lines get blurred and we have now permanently blurred the lines. Jeans, polos, tennis or athletic shoes should have never been allowed in the workplace. That doesn't mean a woman should have a muffin top, tail whale, camel toes and all the other descriptions but they do. Style in the workplace is history. A girl came into work at my office wearing a pair of skin tight booty shorts and a cropped top that barely covered the lower part of her breasts. Sent her home but what was she thinking. She thought it was appropriate. She said it was the only clean garment she had!
