Lenovo ThinkPad T40 Notebook
- By tedye 01/27/2004
- Pros:
Durable, big 80G HD, Long battery life, Hi-res LCD, 32MB VRAM good for 3D, good online driver updates. Centrino is not hot on laps. Has Wireless Wi-Fi a/b (no g), Bluetooth and IR port, easy to communicate with all devices. - Cons:
Slow, cause 4200 RPM HD. No IEEE 1394, ridiculous, even X31 has it. Battery sticks out, kinda loose when you move the laptop. LCD dims too much when on battery, battery goes down fast if you change it. Big opening around CD, the dirt goes in easy -
Summary:
I have been using this T40 for about 2 weeks, so I kinda get some feeling about using it, and I also did some research before I decide to purchase. I had a Toshiba and HP before, and over all I am happy about this IBM purchase, and the point is, it's IBM and it should be good.Pros: 1. Nice design, looks durable.2. Big hard drive 80G, you don't see that very often with others.3. Long battery life, says 7.2 hours, but I run 6 hours, better than others anyway.4. Cool LCD, 14" 1400X1050, some other laptops with 14" can only go 1024X768.5. ATI 9000 32MB RAM video, good enough for the most of 3D games, and much more faster than ATI 7500. I believe ATI costs less battery juice than NVIDIA does.6. Very good online device driver update service through website, even make it easier via ACCESS IBM button build-in on the laptop.7. Compare with P4 laptops, this Centrino laptop is not hot on running at all, you can put it on your laps for hours no unconformable feeling.8. It has Wireless Wi-Fi a/b (no g), Bluetooth and IR port, so it's easy to communicate with wireless network, PDA, cell phone, etc.Cons: 1. Kinda slow compare with others in the same class, I think it has something to do with its slow 4200 RPM hard drive.2. No IEEE1394 fireWire port, you cannot hook up video camcorder for video editing without purchase separate PCMCIA card for it, which is a pain in the neck. This is ridiculous compare with others in the market, plus even IBM X31 has it.3. Battery is stick out, since it's 9 cells, I can put up with that for 7.2 hours' sake. But it's a little bit loose while you move the laptop around, which bothers me a lot.4. In order to have long battery time, system set LCD dims too much, it's kinda too blur to read. But if your manually set it up, the battery life will goes down fast.5. Big opening around CDRW-DVD combo, it's not hurting anything, but I am afraid the dirt will go in easy in the long run.
