Microsoft Zune 8GB Media Player - Black
- By anonymous 10/15/2008
- Pros:
Ease of use, great display, small form factor, versatility. - Cons:
Zune software a bit slow. -
Summary:
This is a great MP3 player. The glass display is crystal clear and the sound quality is excellent. Once you get used to the software and know how to adjust the settings, the application becomes easier to work through. Having owned several mp3 players prior to this one, the Zune takes the cake in terms of quality and ease of use.

- Pros:
Small, good display, good value, wireless sync, main formats supported - Cons:
Main button too sensitive, screen way too small for video, sync issues -
Summary:
I wanted to buy a player other than iPod mainly because all my music I ripped with Windows Media Player in WMA format and this format is not iPod compatible. So my next choice was Microsoft Zune. Device looks nice and displayed image is great (especially on video) however, its size will not let you see too much. The main button is too sensitive but probably it takes practice. It supports all main file formats. Unfortunately these are all the strengths. Now come the weaknesses. First I expected from a Microsoft product to be able somehow to work with Windows Media Player - big mistake because it does not work at all. It comes instead with its own program Zune which is way more difficult to use than Media Player. The Market Place is useless because you may not buy Points with a credit card if you are outside USA but only with prepaid cards which honestly in Canada I did not see. The Social I am not interested in because I am not a teenager. The worst thing is that Zune software is collecting when first run all music from all folders you mentioned. If you forget one or you add new music other than through Zune software you will have to add it manually. The big surprise is that music ripped with Media Player (probably due to copyright protection) you will not be able to use it (it reports "Invalid Media") so you will have to re-rip all your music through Zune software and that is exactly why I didn't want to buy an iPod. The software is really bad. For instance you may not place a song directly into a playing list, you have first to add it to the collection and then add it to a playing list. When in collection, especially if you have lots of songs in your library is a real chalange to find something. In a word everything becomes very complex and it takes you a lot of time. If you want to change frequently your Zune's content then you must be prepared to waste a lot of time. My advice, buy a product without copyright protection because this is really annoying. Is not enough you spend a lot of money to buy music but afterwards you have to spend a lot of time too in order to move your music from one device to another. Really dissappointed. However, I couldn't assume that you will not have the same issues with other products too (this includes iPod).

- Pros:
Good sound quality, ease of use, FM tuner - Cons:
too touch sensitive. turns itself on in my pocket -
Summary:
It was easy to transfer my itunes collection to a zune collection. the Zune lets me listen to my music while also having the advantage of an FM tuner, something that comes in handy at my gym where I can watch TV while working out (the TV sound is available at an FM frequency)

- Pros:
its super easy to load or delete content, the screen doesnt freeze on me all the time, and its easy to find things on the zune itself. - Cons:
the buttons are a tad too sensitive and the volume goes up or down when i want to move forward to another song. -
Summary:
this is my second try at the ZUNE. on the first one i had, i only used it one day before the back button stopped working so i had 'turn it off' in order to look for another artists i wanted to listen to. also when i hit the off button it would only turn off for a few seconds and then turn on again...thus the battery drained super fast. it was defective and was replaced free of charge. now i can go days without having to charge it and the sound quality is GREAT. it holds alot of information and the setup options are cool too. you can add or delete as much space for sharing as you like.

- Pros:
Great hardware. MP3 player has good sound quality and is easy to move through the menus. - Cons:
Software to upload songs is not as user friendly as I would have liked. -
Summary:
I've had several different MP3 players. Pros and cons with all of them. I like the Zune because of the look and is easy to use. The only con I have is with the software you use to upload your songs. It's not as user friendly. You can't just add songs like other MP3 players but have to use this sync option. I accidentally sync'd it up with an empty directory and it removed all my songs!
